Pond And Lake Aeration Systems: Bringing Balance

Pond and Lake Aeration Systems: Bringing Balance

by

Richard Dennis

The role of pond and lake aeration systems is to bring balance to the dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and temperatures throughout the water column. All too often, when warm summer months kick in, you ll find green slimy masses of algae taking over beautiful water features, and sometimes even large reservoirs. Without an aeration system, the stagnant water will cause problems such as excessive algae.

As the water quality worsens, it can start to become cloudy, murky and very smelly due to the release of anaerobic gasses. This situation can also cause health and environmental issues such as fish kills and high levels of human pathogens. It is imperative to keep good circulation in any water feature.

Although the symptoms of low oxygen reveal themselves as algae, odors, sludge and generally poor water quality, the true problem is high nutrients and low dissolved oxygen levels. While it may be tempting to try adding chemicals, such as copper sulfate, that are known to be effective in killing algae, that would not be addressing the cause of the algae blooms. Furthermore, continual use of algaecides will only perpetuate and worsen the problem over time. Pond and lake aeration, on the other hand, treats the problem at its source.

Aeration systems do not actually kill the algae, but instead produce an ecological balance, which discourages the conditions in which the algae blooms occur. In the presence of at least 2 parts per million (PPM) of DO, new communities of bacteria will begin to thrive and multiply. When these aerobic bacteria are established, they consume nutrients about three times faster than algae can, thereby starving the algae of nutrients. Furthermore as these bacteria grow and multiply, they become natural fish food. In this way an aeration system helps convert organic pollutants into equitable biomass rather than algae. On the same note, aeration is a great way to optimize bioremediation projects.

However, the role of an aeration system is not to simply inject air into the water. An effective aeration system will also break up thermal stratification by circulating the entire water column, bottom to top, several times per day. This is important because thermal stratification acts as a physical and chemical barrier for both water treatment and aquatic habitat. By homogenizing the temperatures and DO levels we create an aquatic environment that delivers oxygen to the aforementioned bacteria in the sludge and expands habitat for larger aquatic organisms.

Once the water is properly aerated, the serious problems like odors and fish kills will clear quickly. Over time the ecosystem will stabilize and the occurrence of large algae blooms will subside and the overall health of the system will be greatly enhanced for both the aquatic organisms and us humans.

SpaceX scrubs Falcon I rocket launch

Monday, November 28, 2005

SpaceX called off the much-delayed inaugural launch of their new Falcon 1 rocket on Saturday from Kwajalein’s Omelek Island launch site. The intent was to launch the U.S. Air Force Academy’s FalconSat 2 satellite, which will monitor plasma interactions with the Earth’s upper atmosphere and magnetosphere.

The launch was delayed, then finally cancelled after an oxygen boil-off vent had accidentally been left open. The oxygen was unable to cool the helium pressurant, which then proceeded to evaporate faster than it could be replenished. A main computer issue, probably serious enough to cause a scrub on its own, was also discovered.

This long-anticipated flight was originally expected to be launched in January 2005, however a series of setbacks forced a series of delays, with the flight most recently scheduled to be in early 2006. It was intended to be launched from the Kwajalein atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

The maiden voyage was originally intended to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California with a Naval Research Laboratory satellite and a Space Services Incorporated space burial payload.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

Water Disputes: Violence hits Karnataka, Tamil Nadu; Supreme Court revises Kaveri water share decision

Tuesday, September 13, 2016

Yesterday afternoon, the Supreme Court of India asked Karnataka to release 12000 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water from the Kaveri river till September 20 to Tamil Nadu after Karnataka pleaded not to release water. A week ago, the Supreme Court ordered Karnataka to release 15000 cusecs of water for ten days. Various cities in both states faced violent attacks.

At least five tourist vehicles with Karnataka registration plate were vandalised in Tamil Nadu. In Bangalore, protestors burned Tamil Nadu vehicles. A Tamil Nadu truck was stoned in Chamarajanagar. Pro-Karnataka activists attacked shops and Tamil people in Pandavapura. Police personnel were reinforced at the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border and it was later sealed.

In Tamil Nadu, people vandalised a hotel whose owner was of Kannada origin. They left a note in Tamil, warning Kannada people not to harm Tamilians. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wrote a letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha asking for the safety of Kannada people in Tamil Nadu.

Metro Service in Bengaluru were halted for 20 minutes in the afternoon. Police used lathi-charges to disperse crowds. One person was killed when police used gunfire while confronting vandals under section 144. Considering the security issues, private colleges and schools sent students home.

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said 200 protestors were taken into custody. He also asked the protestors not to vandalise, saying, “Our appeal is if you are protesting, please protest peacefully. We know that injustice has been done to Karnataka. We have deployed sufficient amount of police force. We have got support from Centre”.

Mysore city didn’t face section 144, but considering the ongoings in Bengaluru, students of the National Institute of Engineering were asked to go home at 4:30 PM. They were also advised not to go in groups, as a precaution against the section 144 clause which prohibits large gatherings.

Bangalore City Police confirmed on Twitter that Section 144 was imposed which would last till September 14. The imposition took place at 5 PM IST.Farmers in Bangalore, Mandya, Mysore and Hassan blocked the roads while protesting the decision.

Kaveri begins in Karnataka, but a major part of the river is in Tamil Nadu.Karnataka has limited water supply for farmers and asked the Supreme Court for releasing only 1000 cusecs of water.

The Supreme Court has announced their next date of hearing on September 20.

Learning To Lead With New Business Practices

Submitted by: J. Briere

The American business environment may be on the rebound but there is still much to done. As a collective the business world must come together and begin to reevaluate many of the business practices that have been long held as a standard. As Gordon Gekko once said, Greed is good. As we have seen over the past years this is no longer the case. It has lead to shady business practices and the near collapse of one of the greatest economic super powers of the world. There is now a need for a relearning of business standards and practices to provide a stable and efficient business world.

Learn Your Way

Learning new business practices can be a time consuming investment. Many people may think that they don t have the time to learn new business skills because of already strict and demanding schedules. This is no longer the case. With new multi-modal resources one can dive into a number of different business skills courses. This can be as easy as enrolling in online courses with thousands of hours of interactive instructions on business practices or through SkillSims in which employees can learn through taking part in realistic business scenarios in which their decisions have real world like outcomes. With a broad scope these online course can provide a number of lessons on current and up to date business skills and practices. If your employees learn better from person-to-person lessons then perhaps a PMI Mentoring program may be the solution.

Areas of Benefit

There are many areas in which learning of leadership and professional skills can benefit businesses greatly. Some specific areas that can be improved are business strategies and operations, professional effectiveness, management and leadership, sales and customer facing skills, project effectiveness, finance, HR and administration. To bring out the true potential of your business your employees must focus on a variety of skill sets that pertain to a variety of areas. To increase sales one might invest in courses to increase skill levels in such areas as sales and customer facing skills. This may also be interconnected with management and leadership skills courses. With proper management skills and a renewed sense of leadership employees will prove to be more efficient and productive throughout the work day. Many other areas can benefit from learning new practices and can streamline businesses and provide new ways to save money.

Profit from New Knowledge

Learning new skills in the business world can lead to fresh and inventive thinking. In breaking the mold and incorporating old ideas with new skill sets a business can gain the edge in a fiercely competitive market. It may just be what sets your company apart from the rest of the pack. Learning from courses such as business strategies and operations a company may be able capitalize in areas that were previously unknown or thought to be unprofitable. With competent employees work efficiency can be raised significantly. If a sales representative is confident in his or her ability to sell your product the more likely they are to take the initiative in seeking out new clients. This, in turn, can bring in greater profits for the company. In a way there is nothing to lose in learning something new.

Calls for bottled water bans grow in Canada

Saturday, August 23, 2008

London, Ontario is the latest in a string of Canadian cities to have acted on increasing public demand to ban bottled water. On Monday, the decision to eliminate bottled water sales in city-run facilities was passed by London’s city council with a vote of 15-3 in favour. The move was driven by a desire to reduce waste and shipping, have a lower impact on the environment and promote tap water as a cheap and safe alternative.

London’s new restrictions will be implemented over the next several months in buildings that are already equipped with water fountains. Bottled water will still be permitted at many city-run events, such as upcoming summer festivals. Privately-owned retailers will not be affected by the ban.

Other cities, such as Vancouver, Ottawa and Kitchener, that are already engaged in debate on the issue, may now be watching London carefully for how the ban plays out. Other areas have already begun to phone London with questions on the details of its new regulations. Toronto has begun taking a look at bottled water packaging as part of its waste diversion strategy, and its public school board is looking into the possibility of a total restriction on bottled water sales.

In recent years, an awareness of the energy that is required to manufacture, transport and recycle the product has spread nation-wide. Proponents of the ban point to the fact that it can produce as much as 150 times the volume of greenhouse gas when producing bottled water as compared to supplying the same volume of tap water. They also point out that the water that goes into bottled water products is not inspected as frequently as tap water in Canadian cities.

Some have taken this cause to heart more than others, such as British Environment Minister Phil Woolas, who called the use of bottled water “morally unacceptable.” Restaurant critic Giles Coren of The Times of London criticizes those who use the product as “the new smokers.”

Canada’s beverage industry has come down with criticism on the increasing opposition to bottled water. Spokesman Scott Tabachnick for Coca-Cola Co., which produces Dasani brand bottled water, commented on the convenience of the product: “It’s hard to bring your kitchen sink with you.”

It’s hard to bring your kitchen sink with you.

Vancouver City Councillor Tim Stevenson thinks that bottled water’s time has come and gone: “Bottled water companies have had a fabulous ride on an unnecessary fad.” Vancouver officials are still determining how bottled water restrictions, which have been voted for by the City Council, can be phased in.

Next month, the city is planning to initiate a marketing campaign encouraging Vancouver residents to choose tap water and to remember to carry reusable drinking containers whenever possible.

Renowned environmental activist Dr. David Suzuki has praised London’s decision, saying that it represents a turning point for people’s perceptions on the issue: “I’m really delighted that London has done this because it really makes us focus on some fundamental issues.” He hopes that someday people will “look at anyone who hauls out a bottle of water and say, ‘What the hell’s wrong with you?'”
