Comedian Stephen Colbert wins NASA space station name contest

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

American comedian Stephen Colbert has won a NASA contest poll to determine the name for a new wing on the International Space Station.

After using his Comedy Central show The Colbert Report to call on fans to vote in the contest, the write-in name “Colbert” topped the poll with 230,539 votes.

NASA officials said they ultimately reserve the right to choose an appropriate name, but have said top vote-getters will receive “the most consideration”. The final decision will be made in April.

Almost 1.2 million total votes were cast in the contest, which ended Friday. “Colbert” received more than 40,000 more voters than the second place runner up, “Serenity”, which was one of the choices NASA put forward.

Colbert has mocked the NASA suggestion on The Colbert Report, saying, “Come on, Serenity? That’s not a space module, that’s a Glade plug-in.”

The contest rules say NASA has the right to choose a name “in accordance with the best interests of the agency.” The rules also say, “Such name may not necessarily be one which is on the list of voted-on candidate names.”

Other modules on the space station are named Unity, Harmony and Destiny.

NASA insiders have told Space.com if they choose not to name the module after the comedian, they may consider naming the station’s new $19 million toilet “Colbert” instead.

Colbert, who plays a narcissistic political pundit on his satirical show, has called on his fans (known as “The Colbert Nation”) to help have other things named after him in the past.

Among his other namesakes are Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle, the mascot of the Saginaw Spirit junior ice hockey team in Michigan; Stephen Jr., a bald eagle born at the San Francisco Zoo; Aptostichus stephencolberti, a species of trapdoor spider; Air Colbert, a Virgin America airplane; and AmeriCone Dream, a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor.

Canadian helicopter with 18 onboard crashes into Atlantic Ocean

Friday, March 13, 2009

Two life boats were empty, one person is dead and sixteen others are missing after a helicopter crashed into the frigid north Atlantic Ocean reported search and rescue official, March 12. The Sikorsky S92 helicopter sunk below the surface and the debris field was located about 47 nautical miles (87 km; 54 mi) southeast of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Maydays and alerts were sent at 9:18 local NL time (7:48 EST). The helicopter pilot radioed his intent to return to St. John’s.File:CHC S-92.jpg

The lone survivor, Robert Decker, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. He was rescued by a helicopter which arrived 45 minutes after take off.

Of the eighteen people on board one other body was found and taken to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper called the incident a “tragic accident”. Julie Leroux of the Transportation Safety Board said that mechanical problems were reported on the helicopter, but further investigation was needed.

Earlier reports stated that two people and a life raft were seen in the waters 87 kilometers (54 miles) southeast of St. John’s. There were reports of a second life raft as well. Rescuers soon discovered that the life rafts were empty.

For those wearing survival suits, the survival time would be approximately 24 hours. Wave heights at the time of the crash were six to nine feet (two to three meters), with freezing water temperatures. As a result, emergency rooms at St. John’s hospital were prepared for survivors suffering from hypothermia reported Deborah Collins of the Eastern Health Board.

On board were workers heading to two offshore oilfields, mainly the Sea Rose platform, a part of the White Rose offshore oilfield 315 kilometers (196 miles) southeast of St. John’s. Two people on board were staff of Cougar Helicopters, and two passengers traveling to the Hibernia platform.

Two Cormorant rescue helicopters and one military Hercules plane flew into high winds during the rescue effort. The search and rescue team was supplemented by a coast guard ship and supply ship. There were reports that two other helicopters were dispatched as well.

Derailments close Australian rail routes

Sunday, February 1, 2009

Two train derailments in two days have closed railway lines in Australia.

A Rio Tinto iron ore train derailled at Pilbara, on a spur of the Tom Price to Dampier line on Thursday 29. The following day, a freight train with 40 wagons derailed east of Kalgoorlie, injuring three people.

The second derailment has closed the line used by the long distance Sydney to Perth Indian Pacific passenger train. Operators Great Southern Railway expect to lose A$500,000 revenues as the line remains closed until at least Thursday. Police say heavy rain has affected the area, and the federal Australian Rail Track Corporation say that a new access road needs to be built in order to clear the wreckage and repair the track.

Rio Tinto have sufficient stocks of iron ore already in place to keep working. However, the freight train was carrying consumer products, which may run short in the south of Western Australia in the next few days. The Kalgoorie crash is to be investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, while maintenance company Transfield Services will also be examining the incident.

2007 Taipei International Travel Fair: Bigger than ever before it even begins

Friday, December 14, 2007

The Taipei International Travel Fair (Taipei TVF), founded in 1987 by Taiwan Visitors Association (TVA), is now in its 15th year. This show will start on December 14 and be open through December 17 at the Taipei World Trade Center with participants from 62 countries and 861 tourism companies and organizations. This year’s fair is larger than ever.

At the press conference yesterday, TVA invited some exhibitors including Taiwan, as well as countries from Southeast Asia, Europe, and Oceania to promote their traveling packs for media. The TVA recruited local citizen journalists to cover the event, which they also did last year, and awarded honorary press accreditions for the selected 16 nominees.

Before the press conference, Wikinews reporter Rico Shen had a brief interview with Honorary Chairman of TVA Stanley Chang-shou Yen about their policy on citizen journalism. Stanley said:

The internet is a useful tool that everyone needs. In the past, there was only TV, print, and broadcasting media in Taiwan. But recently, with the great impacts of blogs, personal websites, and discussion forums, we [TVA] think that citizens play a great role in the e-Century. With those trends and impacts, we finally decided to recruit bloggers to participate in our fair with citizen journalists, it is the first ever that the other organizers or exhibitions never did before. I hope those elected bloggers with interests on tourism can play a suitable role to promote our show properly with different opinions than mass media.

Besides of some traditional displays by exhibitors at the press conference, Cross-Strait Tourism Exchange Association also introduced the tourism industry of China at this conference. With the 2008 Summer Olympics to be held in Beijing, the Cross-Strait Pavilion of Taipei ITF will be a focus of the media in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China.

Top 15 U.S. Cities With Likely Home Price Reductions

By Real Estate Advisor

There has been a shift in the risk of home price reductions in the U.S. towards Florida and California and some areas of the southwest, according to the PMI Mortgage Insurance Co.’s Summer 2007 U.S. Market Risk Index. The index ranks the 50 largest metropolitan statistical areas in the U.S. according to the risk of home price reduction in the next two years.

On an average, the 50 MSAs scored 346, which is 34.6 % possibility that home prices will reduce in the next two years. The PMI risk index model has been updated this year with the inclusion of the recent price volatility in the market. Also this year’s index includes risk ranking where in MSAs with consistent characteristics are grouped under the same rank. Thus we have Riverside, CA, Phoenix, AZ, Las Vegas, NV, and West Palm Beach, FL group ranked on the top of the index having about 60 % chance of home price reductions in the next two years. Five MSAs in California – Los Angeles, Santa Ana, Oakland, Sacramento and San Diego in California, and four in Florida – Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Tampa, feature among the top 11 that face a home price decline of more than 50 %.

Home price appreciation rates have slowed in almost all the 50 largest MSAs. The number of MSAs that saw a home appreciation in the double digits in the first quarter of 2007 has declined to five, way below last year’s 26.

Markets which have had a history of price volatility are more likely to experience home price decline in the future, according to Mark F. Milner, PMI’s Chief Risk Officer. Still with all these going ons, it is not a bad time to buy a home as a long term investment as long as buyers pick their mortgage package with care and have realistic expectations of their properties appreciation.

The following are the top 15 metro areas that are likely to experience home price declines in the next two years, with their group ranks at the front, and scores at the end.

Gene therapy trial for skin cancer cures two terminal patients

Friday, September 1, 2006

Results of gene therapy trials at the US National Cancer Institute, Bethesda to fight cancer published online yesterday by the scientific journal Science show some levels of success. However experts have warned that despite the promise more work is needed for this to become a viable cure.

Dr Stephen Rosenberg, who lead the research team, said “It’s important to emphasize this is a highly experimental treatment that’s still in the course of development.”

The team treated 17 terminal skin cancer patients with modified cells from their immune systems. The technique uses genetically modified white blood cells (more specifically T cells) to attack and kill the cancer cells. Of the 17 subjects only 2 were cured of the disease (an aggressive form of skin cancer called a melanoma which is usually fatal in advanced stages). Before the treatment, which lasted 18 months, the patients were only expected to live for up to 6 months. The remaining 15 patients were not affected by the treatment.

One of the successful patients was Mark Origer (53) from Wisconsin. He has been fighting cancer since first being diagnosed in 1999. After finding out about the new trial on the internet he applied and, after interviews, was accepted along with 16 other candidates. The treatment removed Origer’s melanoma and also shrunk another tumor in his liver – to the extent it could be removed surgically. Doctors confirmed he was free of the disease last week, nearly 2 years after treatment began. A second man (39) was cleared of his cancer which had spread to the lungs, liver and lymph nodes. Cancer that progresses to the lymph nodes is usually untreatable and fatal.

T cells can attack and destroy bacteria and other harmful cells like cancer cells. However cancer cells sometimes reduce the signals on their outer surface by which they are recognised, so the immune system cannot affect them. Gene therapy involves modifying some of a patients T cells to contain a new receptor. (Receptors are what enable the immune cell to identify harmful cells, like those corrupted by viruses. The new receptor is inserted with the use of a viral vector, i.e. a virus made safe to insert the receptor in the cell.

In the trial, T Cells were removed from each patient and modified in the laboratory. Patients underwent chemotherapy to kill most of their current immune system, which was replaced by the mutated cells. The modified cells successfully survived after injection into the body – making up 10% of the subject’s T cell count during the first 2 months. The team is now looking for ways to enable the cells to survive longer and in greater numbers.

Experts have called this a significant technical advance but warn that more patients need testing and the technique refining before any conclusive results can be drawn. Dr Edel O’Toole, consultant dermatologist and British Skin Foundation spokesman, said: “I think that the success of this approach in two patients shows promise, however 15 patients did not respond to the treatment suggesting that further work is needed to optimise this approach for all patients, which could take many years.”

Rosenberg now hopes to run a new trial with possibly stronger gene therapy treatments, he is currently awaiting FDA approval.

Gene therapy was much hyped after it’s first successful application in so called “bubble boys” (patients with severe combined immunodeficiency). After follow-up, these trials were stopped when it was discovered that three of eleven patients in one trial had developed leukemia.

“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

North America’s largest outdoor dog festival came back to Toronto last weekend for its fifth year. It ran from the 9th of June to the 10th of June at Toronto’s historical St. Lawrence Market. A Wikinews reporter was there on Sunday to report on some of the events that happened on the last day.

The “Woofstock” dog festival attracted as many as 140,000 people with their dogs. The festival had tons of accessories, sold under tents, to buy for dogs; food, toys, designer clothes, and more. About 400 vendors and exhibitors were there to promote their products, which also gave private dog companies or groups a chance to show their new products. The local SPCA and some animal rescues were under tents answering questions from visitors. While walking, all visitors could see the CN Tower and other very tall buildings.

One of the local TV stations, Citytv, was there. They hosted a live event at the show which was broadcast on TV. People came up on the stage and asked questions regarding their dogs and the host and co-host answered them.

A man, who called himself the “Chalk Master”, drew two pictures on pavement with chalk. He did it for free but donations were welcome. One was a picture of a girl’s head beside a dog’s head, and another with a wolf.

“Hello Humans. I’ve been invited here to provide your eyeball(s), with some pretty colours. I don’t get paid as I work this weekend strictly for tips… so, if you like what you see please make a DONATION. If you don’t like it simply reach into the pocket of the person next to you and give me their money. CHALK MASTER.”

A contest called “Canada’s top dog” had its own tent with a professional photographer taking pictures of dogs behind a white screen; the winning photo is to be published on the cover of “Puppy and dog basics” magazine.

Large “Gourmet” dog bones were also served from a cart and table.

Next year’s festival is expected to be bigger and better with even more attractions.

Ice Machine Basics That You Should Know

By Maxx Johnson

A commercial ice machine is used in many different places of business. Ice machines are used in office buildings, restaurants, country clubs, golf courses, schools and the list goes on and on. Commercial ice machines, such as Manitowoc, are used everywhere you look and they are very important to the success for many different businesses. This being said, if you are in charge of choosing and purchasing a commercial ice machine, obviously, you will need to make sure you buy a reliable unit as well as one that is properly sized.

What should you look for in a industrial ice machine? First you need to consider the area you will place the commercial ice machine. You need to figure out how large or how small you will need your ice making machine to be and how many pounds of ice will it needs to produce. This may depend on what type of building the ice machine will be used in. For example, if it is a busy restaurant or cafeteria, your ice machine should probably choose one that is on the larger side. However, if it is a commercial ice machine in a mid-sized or smaller office, you choice will be of a smaller sort.

Next you need to figure out what your commercial ice machine will be used for. Will it be simply for the employees in a office? Will it provide ice for a golf course beverage cart or a dining room salad bar? If your machine is going to be for a small number of people, you may be able to use a countertop ice machine. If your ice making machine is going to provide ice for a large volume, then you will need more of a commercial unit. You will need to figure out these statics. After you have this all figured out, you can decide what kind of ice machine that will fulfill your needs.

Ice cube machines come with the choice of all different types of services. Many times when you look at an ice machine you are seeing more than just an ice machine. Many times you are seeing an ice machine as well as an ice bin. The actual ice machine is a box that sits on top of the ice bin. These are actually two separate pieces. The ice bin sits on the bottom and is where the ice resides once it is made. With this type of commercial ice machine you can simply lift up the lid and scoop what you need out. This type is best for the larger scale commercial businesses, golf courses or country clubs.

Another decision that you will need to make is what shape of ice do you want your machine to provide? For instance, some make chipped ice for personal beverages, while other machines make larger cubes. The machines that make smaller, chips of ice are better for offices or business hallways. Additional aspects to consider for your commercial ice maker are cooling systems and how well the ice is chilled. Also you may consider filters as some ice machines tend to absorb smells more easily than others machines do.
