Gay Talese on the state of journalism, Iraq and his life

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Gay Talese wants to go to Iraq. “It so happens there is someone that’s working on such a thing right now for me,” the 75-year-old legendary journalist and author told David Shankbone. “Even if I was on Al-Jazeera with a gun to my head, I wouldn’t be pleading with those bastards! I’d say, ‘Go ahead. Make my day.'”

Few reporters will ever reach the stature of Talese. His 1966 profile of Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was not only cited by The Economist as the greatest profile of Sinatra ever written, but is considered the greatest of any celebrity profile ever written. In the 70th anniversary issue of Esquire in October 2003, the editors declared the piece the “Best Story Esquire Ever Published.”

Talese helped create and define a new style of literary reporting called New Journalism. Talese himself told National Public Radio he rejects this label (“The term new journalism became very fashionable on college campuses in the 1970s and some of its practitioners tended to be a little loose with the facts. And that’s where I wanted to part company.”)

He is not bothered by the Bancrofts selling The Wall Street Journal—”It’s not like we should lament the passing of some noble dynasty!”—to Rupert Murdoch, but he is bothered by how the press supported and sold the Iraq War to the American people. “The press in Washington got us into this war as much as the people that are controlling it,” said Talese. “They took information that was second-hand information, and they went along with it.” He wants to see the Washington press corp disbanded and sent around the country to get back in touch with the people it covers; that the press should not be so focused on–and in bed with–the federal government.

Augusten Burroughs once said that writers are experience junkies, and Talese fits the bill. Talese–who has been married to Nan Talese (she edited James Frey‘s Million Little Piece) for fifty years–can be found at baseball games in Cuba or the gay bars of Beijing, wanting to see humanity in all its experience.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with Gay Talese.

Wikinews’ overview of the year 2007

Monday, December 31, 2007

What would you tell your grandchildren about 2007 if they asked you about it in, let’s say, 20 year’s time? If the answer to a quiz question was 2007, what would the question be? The year that you first signed on to Facebook? The year Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse fell apart? The year author Kurt Vonnegut or mime Marcel Marceau died, both at 84?

Let’s take a look at some of the international stories of 2007. Links to the original Wikinews articles are in bold.

Australia’s New South Wales Fire Brigades in crisis over bullying

Sunday, June 13, 2010

The New South Wales Fire Brigades (NSWFB) in Australia has come under scrutiny as a report highlights the latest in a string of sexual abuse and harassment cases. The report also describes the humilation of new recruits in “bizarre” initiation rituals.

The independent investigation led by KPMG, a Swiss audit, taxation and advisory firm, found that less that 9% of those who claimed to have suffered from such abuse were said to be satisfied by the action taken by the NSWFB.

The investigation states that “there are still instances of bullying and harassment … and they are not being adequately addressed…Some degree of physical bullying and intimidation is present across all areas of the organization, including the administration directorates.”

Physical abuse in the NSWFB has become a critical issue, with most cases manifesting in the initation of new recruits. These initiations require them to remove their clothing and be subject to physical torment and irritation while being watched by other members of the brigade. It is estimated that more then 600 firefighters have witnessed or have experienced physical bullying in the past two years and that this is not exclusive to recruits, but also includes a number of superintendents and captains.

Abuse hot spots have also been identified, with the brigade’s Special Operations Unit having the highest percentage of such claims.

Despite statements made by the New South Wales Emergency Services Minister, Steve Whan, to take firm action against all involved, a “Boy’s Club” mentality continues to pervade the organization, leading to both abuses and the stripping of female firefighters of adequate support, with 26% of female firefights admit to experiencing sexual harassment while 36% have been subject to verbal assaults, obscene gestures and jokes.

It was also revealed that in the light of KMPG’s investigation that the Independent Commission Against Corruption will launch its own investigation into physical and sexual abuses in the NSWFB.

The KPMG report puts forward 14 recommendations which are to be utilised by the Emergency Services Ministry in the hope of reforming the culture within the NSWFB.

High school orders shot glasses as prom favors

Monday, May 11, 2009

Several Lancaster County, Pennsylvania high schools held their junior-senior proms this past weekend, and per tradition, they received gifts from the prom committee. Instead of traditional prom favors, however, Warwick High School in Lititz ordered more than 450 shot glasses and distributed them to students, in a move the administration now says it regrets.

In 2008, the Prom Committee gave out picture frames to the girls and money clips to the boys. However, the junior class did not have as much money this year, and so the school made a decision to buy an inexpensive prom favor. The school’s principal signed off on the decision to order the shot glasses, but assistant principal Scott Galen states that the paperwork identified the shot glasses as merely “prom souvenir[s]”.

While the school administration took responsibility for the decision to order the glasses, Galen called it a simple oversight. Senior Class President Phoebe Baum, who had helped plan the prom the previous year, remarked that it was likely a decision made in a time crunch and was not fully thought through. Galen said that the administration did not wish to send a message that condoned underage drinking.

Roof Covering:

Various materials require different skills. A traditional carpenter will have terrific difficulty adapting to steel roof framing. With time, having said that, individuals develop new abilities and techniques to adapt to changes in technology. It is required consequently that whoever is really installing the roof frame, whether or not it is a traditional timber, timber truss or metal truss assembly, has the suitable skills, tools and knowledge to do the job correctly. Clear instructions, excellent materials and carpenters who take pride in their work are all crucial to make sure of the longevity of a roof. The sudden and unexpected collapse of my neighbour’s carport roof some ten years after it was built has imprinted the importance of good carpentry practice on me.There are a selection of materials that may be employed to cover a building. The appearance or style of a building will largely depend on the supplies and colours chosen along with its design features. The majority of houses in Australia use either tiles or corrugated iron to cover the roof.Tiles:Tiles are made of kiln-fired clay or cement. Clay tiles are typically thicker, heavier and much less ideal in shape than cement tiles. The slight distinction between one clay tile and another is probably a good thing since this permits air to circulate additional freely inside the roof space and thus keep it cooler in summer. On the other hand, the closer fit of cement tiles prevents any wind-blown rain from entering the roof space. Clay tiles may well be merely fired in a kiln to produce the orange-brown colour of the clay or they may perhaps be partially or fully glazed to give them a different colour. Glazed tiles might be impervious to water whilst unglazed tiles may well be slightly porous and enable moss or lichens to grow on the roof after some years. Plant growth along the bedding mortar of ridge tiles can trigger the mortar to break away and dislodge the tiles The use of premixed flexible bedding mortar will minimise this problem. Occasional checks of the roof and some minor maintenance will prevent this from occurring. Cement tiles are normally cheaper than clay tiles but their key drawback is that they fade. Whereas a clay tile roof will age and develop some discoloration as a result of moss, lichens and dirt accumulation, the cement tile roof will gradually lose its initial gloss and develop a dry, powdery surface. The paints employed to colour cement base tiles will break down. Once the gloss is lost the cement tile will absorb water and add weight to the roof frame which might then sag. The only solution to aged cement roof tiles is to have them repainted. There’s a wide range of tile colours and profiles to choose from to achieve the desired look for a building. Each manufacturer will specify a minimum roof pitch for their tiles. Where a lower than specified pitch is desired then sarking might be laid beneath the tiles to stop water ingress. It’s worth checking for inherent problems with the tile you choose. Some glazed tiles tend to stick together when stacked directly after firing. When they are pulled apart the glaze is lifted where it touches with the tile below. Light brown clay marks will show up on each tile and spoil the look. This is especially evident on dark coloured tiles. Cement tiles that are too fresh might be brittle and could break. A careless or heavy person walking on a freshly tiled roof will likely cause some tiles to break.Care needs to be taken to install tiles correctly. The very first row installed is the bottom row which should begin at the centre of the gutter. Battens might be spaced according to the tile being used. Every other tile should be wire tied, clipped or nailed to the batten. On Tuscan style roofs without gutters, every tile on the bottom row should be tied down. In extremely windy areas every single tile on the roof should be secured. This will undoubtedly incur an extra price. Tiles that finish above a valley should be cut cleanly with a gap of 75mm between the two sections of roof. This will be sufficient space to enable leaves to be washed down the valley and not to collect and trigger water problems. The last tile which rides over a gable end ought to cover the barge board and scribe. All capping tiles need to be correctly bedded with mortar finished neatly with a small trowel, and sponge wiped before the mortar hardens. It is best to use a flexible mortar mix to decrease the risk of cracking. All bedding mortar must be of a colour that matches the tiles unless an alternative contrasting colour is specified. It’s necessary that the roof tilers work systematically and in cooperation with each other. It’s not uncommon to see a team of people swarming over a job and creating a mess with mortar splatters, unnecessary tile breakages and littering the site with the broken pieces that they throw back down. The team supervisor must instruct workers to make certain all broken tiles are placed in a bin. The roof will need to be swept down after the bedding mortar has dried and all rubbish cleaned out of the gutters. After the roof tilers have finished the painter ought to return to paint the valley iron with a colour matching the tiles.

CNN medical correspondent to be named US Surgeon General

Wednesday, January 7, 2009

United States president-elect Barack Obama has chosen Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a medical correspondent from the American television station CNN, to be the next United States Surgeon General. Gupta, also a neurosurgeon, was reported to be chosen because of his background in broadcasting and skills in communication. He is currently the host of House Call, a program on CNN, a columnist for Time Magazine, a contributor to CBS News, and also a part time worker at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. He will likely leave all of these positions to serve as US Surgeon General.

Dr. Joseph Heyman of the American Medical Association supported Gupta, stating “If chosen, Dr. Gupta’s communication skills and medical knowledge could be a boon to the new administration’s health system reform efforts.” Conversely, Doctors Steven Woloshin and Lisa Schwartz from the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice stated that the next Surgeon General would need to “…demonstrate skills that are too often missing in medical news on TV: skepticism about the science and a careful analysis of both the benefits and harms of medical care.”

According to reports by sources close to the discussions, Gupta met with Barack Obama on November 25 in Chicago to discuss the position. He later met with several advisors to the president-elect, including Thomas A. Daschle of the US Department of Health and Human Services. He was reported to tell Obama that he wanted the Surgeon General position. Gupta declined to comment about the situation yesterday, but did state that he plans to accept Obama’s choice.

Wikipedia founder embroiled in affair and financial allegations

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

The implosion of a relationship between Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and journalist Rachel Marsden has resulted in controversy and international headlines. Associated Press and ABC News have also reported on questionable activity by Wales involving Wikimedia Foundation expenses. The Wikimedia Foundation is a donor-supported non-profit organization which runs Wikipedia.

Marsden had contacted Wales two years ago about concerns she had over the article about her on Wikipedia, and Wales determined the article was not compliant with Wikipedia’s standards. The tech blog Valleywag revealed Wales had a personal relationship with Marsden, and posted supposed transcripts of their instant message conversations on its site, www.valleywag.com. Wales and Marsden met in February, and The Times reported that “An apparent transcript of their conversations before that meeting suggests that, although Mr Wales had withdrawn from the editing process, he was still influencing the editors.” The Times quoted Wales from the chat logs as having stated to Marsden “The truth is of course a much worse conflict of interest than that; but that will do.” — in reference to his conflict of interest regarding Marsden’s article on Wikipedia.

Wales posted a public statement on Saturday on Wikipedia addressing the matter, and stated that his relationship with Marsden was over: “First, while I find it hard to imagine that anyone really cares about my sex life, the facts are: I am separated from my wife. I considered myself single at the time of my one meeting with Rachel Marsden on Feb. 9, 2008 … I am no longer involved with Rachel Marsden. Gossipy stories suggesting that I have been in a relationship with her ‘since last fall’ are completely false … I care deeply about the integrity of Wikipedia, and take very seriously my responsibilities as a member of the board and as a member of the Wikipedia community. I would never knowingly do anything to compromise that trust.” With regard to the conflict of interest in Marsden’s article, Wales had acknowledged to a team of Wikipedia editors in February 2008 that he and Marsden “became friends … and that we would be meeting about that,” and stated “I recused myself from any further official action with respect to her biography.”

On Sunday, The Canadian Press reported that Marsden had posted photos of herself on Ebay, and was selling items that Wales had left at her New York City apartment. In her Ebay posting, Marsden stated: “Hi, my name is Rachel and my (now ex-) boyfriend, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, just broke up with me via an announcement on Wikipedia … It was such a classy move that I was inspired to do something equally classy myself, so I’m selling a couple of items of clothing he left behind, here in my NYC apartment, on eBay. Jimbo was supposed to come visit me in a couple of weeks and pick up some of his stuff, but obviously that won’t be happening now.” Marsden told The Canadian Press “It didn’t really help matters that Jimmy chose to announce the breakup to the entire world via Wikipedia (which apparently now is an online encyclopedia that doubles as a personal soapbox?) rather than to me directly (which he did much later, in an instant message discussion).”

I care deeply about the integrity of Wikipedia, and take very seriously my responsibilities as a member of the board and as a member of the Wikipedia community. I would never knowingly do anything to compromise that trust.

Marsden placed a t-shirt and sweater which she said were left at her apartment by Wales up on Ebay, and started the bidding for each at ninety-nine cents, with the auctions set to end on March 12. By Monday, bidding on the t-shirt had reached US$300, and by Tuesday the highest bid had reached $12,200. In an email to The Globe and Mail, Marsden stated “My only focus right now, to be really honest, is on my career and finding a way to get back into print, TV, or radio here in NYC,” she wrote. “All of this other personal stuff is just an unfortunate distraction.”

Jay Walsh, the Wikimedia Foundation’s head of communications, told the San Jose Mercury News that Wales’ actions in relaying Marsden’s concerns about her Wikipedia article to a team of trusted editors was within his “routine” role. When asked by the San Jose Mercury News if Wales’ actions regarding the Marsden article could compromise his role with the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikipedia, Walsh responded “No, absolutely not.”

On Tuesday, ABC News carried a story by Wired News reporter Megan McCarthy regarding allegations of “excessive spending” by Wales, and Associated Press also reported on questions involving Wikimedia Foundation expenses. McCarthy reported that former Wikimedia executive Danny Wool, who had left the foundation last year, criticized Wales’ use of Wikimedia Foundation expenses in a blog post. Wool stated that Wales had tried to expense $300 bottles of wine, a $1,300 dinner for four at a Florida steakhouse, and visits to Moscow massage parlors to the foundation, and that the foundation rescinded Wales’ corporate credit card in 2006. Wool also stated that Wales paid the foundation $7,000, after being short $30,000 on receipts for expenses.

Wool told EPICENTER that “There were occasions where he used [the Wikimedia Foundation] for personal advancement under the guide [sic] of the mission. And, as someone who was in there for the mission part of it, I found that rather distressful.” Wool commented in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle: “Originally, it was carelessness … But as things developed, it became more apparent and obvious that he was taking advantage of the foundation credit card. It was almost like his personal piggy bank.”

Jimmy has never used Wikimedia money to subsidize his personal expenditures. Indeed, he has consistently put the foundation’s interests ahead of his own.

In an instant message exchange with Associated Press, Wales denied that the Wikimedia Foundation had taken away his corporate credit card, and asserted that he had made the decision to stop expensing business travel for the foundation. Wales highlighted a statement by the foundation’s executive director Sue Gardner: “Jimmy has never used Wikimedia money to subsidize his personal expenditures. Indeed, he has consistently put the foundation’s interests ahead of his own.” In an email to Associated Press, Brad Patrick, a former attorney for the Wikimedia Foundation, stated “Danny seems interested in blogging his way straight to a lawsuit”.

Florence Devouard, who chairs the Wikimedia Foundation, told Associated Press that Wales had been “slow in submitting receipts,” and that the foundation had rejected Wales’ expense at the Florida steakhouse. Devouard told fellow foundation board members in a private email that she had convinced Associated Press that “the money story was a no story,” and told Wales “I find (it) tiring to see how you are constantly trying to rewrite the past. Get a grip!” Wales told Associated Press: “The board, the current executive director, the previous executive director, and independent auditors have reviewed our books and publicly agree that all of my expenses were appropriate and fully accounted for.”

Media reports speculated on how the controversy would end up being represented in Wikipedia itself. On Wednesday, the St. Petersburg Times wrote: “Wales’ Wikipedia page said only this about Marsden: ‘Wales had a brief relationship with Canadian journalist Rachel Marsden.'” An article in The Australian surmised: “History will decide whether Mr Wales broke his own principles, but before that happens there may well be a Wikipedia page devoted to the controversy.”

The Real Estate Investment Game}

The Real Estate Investment Game

by

Brewer Caldwell”I’m finally in it”, says the savvy investor. I’m finally in the investment game! He just had his first primetime real estate transaction. He’s been thinking about doing it for years. Finally with these prices, who can resist. His house is set to close next week. He wants to sit on it for awhile and let that appreciation and inflation do its work. Although he can’t afford letting it just sit there he should probably get a tenant. With his low mortgage payment from his great deal, he might even cash flow with monthly rental income. That sounds like a great idea. The more he thinks about it, the more the swirling thoughts hit him that he would need to worry about getting the home rent ready, marketing the property, showing the property, screening the tenant, writing up the contract, moving the tenant into the property, doing all the ongoing maintenance, collecting the rent, praying he would never need to evict the tenant, and this whole time being available non-stop for any incoming calls or issues. Are you kidding me? When will he have time to buy his second, third, or even fourth investment property? What a nightmare. At the end of the day we all want to be that savvy investor. The reason we fail is because we end up taking on too much to save a few dollars here and there. Where does that leave you besides more stress, extra weight and less hair? Do your homework on real estate but leave the property management up to the experts. Property managers deal with investment property issues everyday and are worth every penny. No one wants that weekend call from their tenant that the air conditioner is out when they’re out on the lake with their family. They don’t want to be standing in lines at the court house trying to file a judgment to get their tenant out of their beautiful home. These are all issues owners shouldn’t even be considering. Real estate investment owners need to be focusing on that next great real estate deal that is around every corner right now. This is even more crucial if someone is an out of state investor. So many investors make the mistake that they can play this game from long distance. I don’t want to tell you how many sad cases I have seen or properties I have taken over that have been in this situation. It is never pretty and is always thousands of dollars in lost mortgage payments, fix up costs, and most importantly time. Few investors also realize that most states can fine owners for not having an in state statutory agent representing them. These fines can be as high as $1000. There are also very specific laws that differ from state to state in regards to the Landlord Tenant Act and what your rights are as an owner and tenant. This is what I mean when I say do your homework.Be smart and get in the investment game. Make a plan and then work the plan.
