Emaar Properties claims Burj Dubai as world’s tallest building

Sunday, July 22, 2007

United Arab Emirates (UAE) developer Emaar Properties has claimed that their Burj Dubai commercial and residential tower, currently under construction, has become the world’s tallest building, reaching a height of 512.1 metres (or 1,680 feet) and 141 storeys.

The current official record holder, Taipei 101 of Taiwan, has a height of 508 metres and 101 storeys, and will retain the “tallest building” title for some time to come. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat sets the criteria for achieving height records for buildings, and will not evaluate the Burj Dubai until construction is complete in late 2008. Although final height details have been kept secret by the developer, the Burj Dubai is expected to reach nearly 700 metres in height, with approximately 160 storeys.

The current record holder for the world’s tallest free-standing structure is the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada. It has a height of 553 metres. The Burj Dubai, therefore, would claim both records when it is completed.

Once the Burj Dubai is completed, it will have required 330,000 cubic metres of concrete, 39,000 tonnes of steel and 142,000 square metres of glass, according to Emaar Properties. The building will have 56 lifts (elevators) that can move at a rate of speed of 1.75 to 10 metres per second.

Dubai is undergoing a construction boom currently with the Burj Dubai as the planned centrepiece of a $US20 billion project, which will eventually realize some 30,000 apartments and boast the world’s largest shopping mall.

There have been criticisms of the working conditions for construction workers in the UAE. A majority of the estimated 500,000 construction workers in the UAE are foreign workers from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

In a 2006 report on the UAE’s treatment of migrant workers, entitled Building Towers, Cheating Workers, Human Rights Watch documented abuses in UAE such as, “extremely low wages, several years of indebtedness to recruitment agencies for fees that UAE law says only employers should pay, the withholding of employees’ passports, and hazardous working conditions that result in apparently high rates of death and injury.”

In October of last year, Human Rights Watch delivered specific recommendations to the UAE government for improvement of working conditions. The UAE government acted swiftly on the report and put in place several improvements, which were applauded by Human Rights Watch.

However, the salaries of migrant construction workers remain in the range from $106 to $250 per month, while the national average wage is over $2,000 per month. Trade unions remain illegal in the UAE.

How To Look And Feel 10 Years Younger Wellness Coach

How to Look and Feel 10 Years Younger – Wellness Coach by Darlene SiddonsThe first thing to realize is that we have been programmed on societies unhealthy fast food mentality, and how I know this is that when I decided to eat healthy and eat only fresh organic foods that I spent many hours in the kitchen compared to what I did before. So I really know first hand why they call it fast food.drive up, order, eat and toss. Now this is all extremely bad on your health, body, mind and soul; and another biggy is the environment. Now lets break this down:HEALTH: None of this food is organic, so no telling where it has been or where it came from; what is in it; how fresh it is or what chemicals that have been used to keep it fresher.BODY: Our bodies are not designed to process this kind of food, so it (the food) creates allergies which creates dis-ease in our bodies and then we take medications to clear up the allergies and on goes the cycle.MIND: The mind is an organ that needs and excels on proper maintenance, which includes the proper nutrients, which we get in our foods. When our minds are not clear and functioning properly we cant do that either. One goes along with the other.SOUL: When we fix our food with love and care, and then eat it in a pleasant surrounding and not on the go our soul is feed along with our bodies, so then we are using the mind, body, soul connection with our meals and our nutritional intake. ENVIRONMENT: We will be protecting our earth and be thinking green when we dont use Styrofoam take out and paper bags etc etc on a daily basis, and of course here I need to stress the use of cloth grocery bags instead of paper and/or plastic. This also feeds the soul, body, mind as were are doing our part for the Global Warming and our Mother Earth.I now eat healthy (organic and fresh), take quality supplements (not all supplements are created equal), carry my groceries in cloth bags and recycle all items in my household, and I now feel and look 10 years younger. Plumbers take care when they enter your home. They know that you want to keep it clean, so they take care to make sure that no mud or other debris is on their boots when they enter. After the work is done, the sit cleaned up to look like it did before the plumber arrived. Repairs can be disruptive, but professional plumbers try to make it as minimal as possible.

When you need a plumber in Westchester County NY, its best work with those that are communicative. They are interested in hearing what you need, and are more than glad to answer any questions that you may have. This could be about the technical aspects of the job or about billing. You should never feel uncomfortable when talking with a plumber.

Plumbers are available at all hours, because emergencies can happen at any time. IF you have leak, it can very worrying due to the potential for extensive damage. If you manage to fix the leak temporarily, you still need to have a plumber make a permanent repair. The potential for the leak to come back is great, and it may be worse next time.

If your drains are clogged, don’t use chemicals in the system. Call a plumber to do the job right, Chemicals may damage your pipes and this will cost a lot more money than just hiring the professional to clean the drain. A drain needs to be protected from clogs, so afterwards, don’t toss grease down the kitchen sink. Be sure to minimize any paper that is introduced into the system as well. Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish dies at age 67

Sunday, August 10, 2008

Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish died Saturday in southern American state of Texas three days after heart surgery at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

Darwish’s poems are considered as an encapsulation of the Palestinian cause.

Palestinians in Ramallah went to the streets, some weeping, gathered around candles in the darkened streets and lit candles expressing their sadness.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared three days of mourning.

“The passing of our great poet, Mahmoud Darwish, the lover of Palestine, the pioneer of the modern Palestinian cultural project, and the brilliant national leader, will leave a great gap in our political, cultural and national lives,” Abbas said. “Words cannot describe the depth of sadness in our hearts, Mahmoud, may God help us for your loss.”

A day after his death many intellectuals and politicians in the Middle East gave their tributes in honor of him.

Ahmed Fouad Negm, a famous Egyptian poet, told Reuters “[h]e translated the pain of the Palestinians in a magical way. He made us cry and made us happy and shook our emotions, Apart from being the poet of the Palestinian wound, which is hurting all Arabs and all honest people in the world, he is a master poet.”

“Mahmoud Darwish knew how to express the attachment of an entire people to its land and the absolute desire for peace. His message, which calls for coexistence, will continue to resonate and will eventually be heard”, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said in a statement.

Darwish will get the equivalent of a state funeral in the West Bank on Tuesday, the first since Yasser Arafat died in 2004.

Toyota to suspend sales of Lexus GX 460 over new safety fears

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Japanese auto maker Toyota is to temporarily suspend sales of its luxury Lexus GX 460 SUV following an unfavorable verdict from Consumer Reports, which concluded “Don’t Buy: Safety Risk,” the first such warning in almost a decade.

After conducting its standard emergency handling tests on the 2010 version of the Lexus GX 460, Consumer Reports became concerned that the rear of the vehicle had a tendency to slide out, which in real life situations could lead to rollovers. However, the consumer organisation is also unaware of any such incidents with the 5000 GX 460s sold since its launch three months ago.

Already embattled with ongoing safety issues with its vehicles, Toyota has been quick to act, though it did claim that the car was safe to drive and that it had passed internal safety standards. According to Toyota, “Lexus’ extensive vehicle testing provides a good indication of how our vehicles perform and we are confident that the GX meets our high safety standards.”

Huge interest takes Wikileaks offline

Saturday, March 29, 2008

The Wikileaks website, which publishes sensitive and censored material submitted by anonymous contributors, has experienced unprecedented levels of Internet traffic today through public interest. This interest has caused the website’s servers to be unable to meet the demand of over 164 gigabytes of download traffic within twenty-four hours, leading the site to be temporarily inaccessible.

The film Fitna, directed and produced by Dutch politician Geert Wilders, has caused controversy for its presentation of Wilders’ negative view of Islam as being committed to world domination and acts of terrorism. A trailer for the film was widely uploaded to many video sharing sites, including YouTube and Google Video; this met with anger from Islamic nations, the debacle culminating in Pakistan’s government ordering the nation’s internet service providers to block the YouTube site. This caused YouTube to be inaccessible to residents of other countries whose Internet service providers’ equipment automatically began routing traffic to YouTube via Pakistan Telecom’s servers, due to their ban accidentally propagating to other providers. Ultimately, YouTube acquiesced to the demands made by Pakistan and other organisations, in exchange for access being restored. The site LiveLeak originally hosted a copy of the trailer, which has now been replaced with a video message stating that the lives of their staff have been put at risk due to hosting it.

As a consequence of this censorship, Wikileaks mirrored the video, receiving heavy access traffic through hosting one of the few copies remaining on the Internet. Wikinews has obtained an exclusive statement from a representative of Wikileaks, affirming that the site has not been taken off-line due to external pressure, and is instead suffering technical problems due to this high demand. The representative gave the following statement:

It seems that due to a more than less overwhelming interest in the Fitna video and recent other media coverage from the protests in Tibet, as well as a few dozen new documents leaked on the portal in the last few days, parts of the portal have given up service and need a few warm words from a friendly Wikileaks operator. Please standby, the portal will be back soon.

Wikileaks gained recent public attention in the Bank Julius Baer vs. Wikileaks lawsuit, following publication of leaked documents that were alleged to provide evidence of money laundering, tax evasion and asset hiding by Swiss financial institution Bank Julius Baer. The documents are said to have been uploaded by Rudolf Elmer, a former chief operating officer of the bank’s Cayman Islands division, who was sacked following an investigation by the bank that involved polygraph testing. Wikileaks has not, however, stated that Elmer was the source of the documents. Bank Julius Baer sought an injunction against the operator of Wikileaks’ domain name, Dynadot, to remove access to the site from the Wikileaks.org domain; this was granted by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The site was consequently inaccessible through this domain, although access could be obtained through many alternate addresses. Following activity by organisations such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union, who sought to defend the right to free speech that Wikileaks relied upon, the lawsuit was dropped and access was restored.
