Jawbone found in Aruba is not Natalee Holloway’s

Thursday, November 25, 2010

A jawbone found in Aruba is not that of missing American Natalee Holloway, who was a recent high school-graduate at the time of her disappearance. Officials confirmed the news after Dutch scientists completed tests on the bone. The jawbone, which also had a wisdom tooth with it, was found by an American tourist close to the Phoenix Hotel. A second bone had also been found by another tourist earlier this month.

The bone was sent to the Netherlands Forensic Institute where scientists completed tests. They compared the bone to dental records given to them by Natalee’s father, from which they confirmed the the bone was not that of Natalee, although it was human. It was said to be unlikely that the bone was Holloway’s as there is no physical evidence that she was murdered.

Beth accepts the forensic conclusions, is emotionally exhausted from the inexplicably long wait, and deeply disappointed in the time and manner in which she learned of the results.

Taco Stein, the Aruban Solicitor General, released a statement after the announcement was made. He commented on the speed of the identification; he said that they had quickly ruled out Holloway because her records had shown that she had her wisdom teeth previously removed.

Tim Miller, the Director of the Texas EquuSearch, released a statement after talking to Natalee’s father. He said “Dave [Natalee’s father] has been in contact with Aruban authorities and spoke with FBI this morning, the agent working the case. Dave believes it is Natalee.”

An attorney for Natalee’s mother, Beth Twitty, released a statement saying “Beth accepts the forensic conclusions, is emotionally exhausted from the inexplicably long wait, and deeply disappointed in the time and manner in which she learned of the results.” He commented on the Aruban authorities saying that “Apparently Aruban prosecutors were more sensitive to media concerns than the painful vigil of a mother.”

Natalee Holloway disappeared on the island in 2005 while on a school trip. She was last seen leaving a nightclub with three men, one of which was later identified as Joran van der Sloot. Van der Sloot was detained twice by police but has never been charged with Holloway’s disappearance. He is currently in Peru facing a different murder charge. Aruban authorities have said that they are checking neighboring islands to find a match for other missing persons.

Oil spill in Gulf of Mexico reported to have reached coast; offshore drilling ban announced by Obama administration

Correction — August 24, 2015 This article incorrectly describes BP as ‘British Petroleum’. In fact, such a company has not existed for many years as BP dropped this name when becoming a multinational company. The initials no longer stand for anything.

Sunday, May 2, 2010

As reports came out yesterday that the oil spill caused by the explosion and sinking of an oil rig in Gulf of Mexico near Louisiana had reached the coast, the Obama administration announced a ban on all future offshore drilling at least until the investigation into the incident is completed.

Early Friday morning, the US Coast Guard received reports that oil from the spill had washed ashore, and while officials have not confirmed the reports, winds continue to push the slick northward towards land, and conditions are deteriorating, making cleanup of the spill increasingly difficult. The Coast Guard said it was planning to conduct a flyover of the slick to determine its extent sometime on Friday. According to the National Weather Service, strong winds and thunderstorms are predicted to continue through the weekend, hindering cleanup efforts.

Also early on Friday morning, a senior government official, White House advisor David Axelrod, said that the government was immediately banning all new offshore drilling until the investigation into the spill had been completed. His announcement came just after a month the administration relaxed restrictions of offshore drilling.

The operation to clean up the spill has accelerated in recent days, with the US Navy having joined the effort, as well as resources from the Coast Guard and British Petroleum (BP), the lessor of the rig at the time of the explosion. The total assets deployed in the operation are estimated to be around 1,900 people and more than 300 ships and aircraft. Additionally, six remotely operated submarines are trying to stem the leaks, which now number three, at the ocean’s floor.

On Wednesday, the estimated amount of oil spilling from the damaged well was raised to 5,000 barrels, or around 210,000 gallons, a day, five times the original estimate of 1,000 barrels a day. This figure was later revised upwards again to 25,000 barrels (1.05 million gallons) per day. So far, the cleanup operation has laid around 210,000 feet of containment booms to protect vulnerable wildlife refuges on the Gulf Coast, and an additional 66,000 feet of boom has been provided by the US Navy. Since the beginning of the operation, more than 18,000 gallons of an oil/water mix have been recovered from the ocean, and after a successful test burn of oil, plans are being made to scale the burns up. According to a BP official, “We believe we can now scale that up and burn between 500 and 1,000 barrels at a time.” The first test burned around 100 barrels of oil.

Despite the efforts, many are still worried about the potential consequences of the spill, and officials said that the damage could end up being more than that caused by the Exxon Valdez oil spill 20 years ago, which spilled 11 million gallons of oil into Alaska’s Prince William Sound. One analyst said that he expected “that movement is going to continue to stress and fatigue the pipe and create more leaks,” adding that “this is not on a good trajectory.”

BP has developed two options to stop the flow of oil at the source, but both are expected to take at least weeks to complete. The first option is to lower large structures over the leak, which would allow the oil to be safely transported to the surface. BP is building one such structure, but it isn’t expected to be completed for at least several weeks. The second option is to drill a second well which would then plug the leak at the source. A well for this purpose will begin to be drilled within two days, although it could be up to three months before the leak is completely plugged.

Wikinews interviews Mark Everson, U.S. Republican Party presidential candidate

Thursday, August 20, 2015

Former U.S. Commissioner of Internal Revenue Mark Everson took some time to talk with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Republican Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

Everson served as Commissioner of Internal Revenue, the administrative head of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from 2003 to 2007, during the George W. Bush administration. After his departure, he briefly served as CEO of the American Red Cross, worked in the cabinet of Indiana governor Mitch Daniels, and worked for the tax consulting firm alliantgroup. He announced his candidacy this past March with a sixteen-page open letter in which he outlined the six pillars of his campaign: amnesty for illegal immigrants, reinstatement of the military draft, a promise to serve only a single presidential term, and calls for tax reform, deficit reduction, and corporate responsibility.

He was excluded from the August 6 Fox News Republican presidential debate and has been excluded from most presidential polls. However, he is listed on the Republican Party’s website as one of 18 candidates and filed a Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaint against Fox News for his exclusion from the August 6 debate.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, Everson discusses his 2016 campaign, the media blackout of his campaign, and his views on the presidency and the possible Everson administration.

Death And Taxes}

Death and Taxes

by

SandsYou know that they say there are only two things in life that are certain: death and taxes. Well that is entirely incorrect; there are lots of things in life that are certain. Like it’ll rain after you’ve washed your car for the first time in three months, that call you’ve been waiting for will come as soon as you go to the loo, your best friend will pop in for a quick visit during your favourite TV programme, your dog will jump muddy paw prints on your clean pants, you will spill coffee on your white shirt, you will fart at yoga, you will snort when you laugh on a first date, you will trip on the pavement in front of a motorcycle gang, the list does go on but that is a point well proven.

Let us pick the worst on that list and expound on it. Farting at yoga. Ok, that’s a joke, it’s embarrassing but not the worst, neither is snorting on your first date although that wouldn’t exactly be an action of choice either. Taxes, they’re the real killer; two certainties for the price of one, you probably wouldn’t get a rebate on death though, you’d have to pay for it somehow. Its not enough that we pay tax every day on everything that we buy and use. From things that really shouldn’t be taxed like books and vegetables and bread to things that maybe we shouldn’t mind paying tax on like alcohol and tobacco and DVDs. Yet every year we still have to fork over a large percentage of our earnings, our earnings, to the government so that they can do, whatever it is that they say they do. This is, however, not a tirade against tax, this merely about tax.

More specifically about paying taxes if you live in one country and work in another. There is this perception that if you work for less than 183 days in another country you are a tax non-resident, which means that you don’t pay tax in that country. This is largely a false perception as you have to meet certain other criteria as well and even if you do meet all the criteria you should still be paying tax on the income that you earn in that country. The laws are quite complex. It is strongly recommended that you hire a tax consultant who knows exactly what is going and keeps up to date with the rules and regulations governing international tax law as well as the tax laws of the countries concerned. If you work over 185 days in a country you are considered to be a tax resident and you can then be taxed on your total income, this includes investments etc.

You need to be careful about paying double tax i.e. in your home country and the country where you are earning money. Some countries have a double taxation avoidance treaty and this is good news for you. If the country that you’re in doesn’t have a double taxation treaty, it could mean bad news for you. Again, this is why you need a taxation consultant, someone who knows all the ins and outs of tax law and who can explain it all to you in terms that you will understand and who might be able to find some loopholes for you. Not that we’re advocating you cheat on your taxes, just that if there is some way that makes it easier on you payment wise, then go for it.

Taxation consultants do more than just help you with laws and loopholes. They take on all the paperwork and administration involved in taxes (and goodness knows there are a lot of forms) so that you are free to focus on your business or carry on with your private life with the minimum of stress and hassle. They provide a single point of contact thus reducing costs and allowing you to easily keep in contact and track progress. They provide reliable information quickly and efficiently. They assess you situation and tailor make a solution to fit your needs. You are assured of confidentiality and costs are all inclusive.

Taxes are daunting at the best of times, but there never is a best of times” for tax. Most face them and dread the worst. Some may even prefer to face death as the friendlier and warmer certainty, the cuddlier option. Unfortunately it is not to be avoided. The best we can do is face it well armed with grit, determination, a sense of humour and a supreme tax consultant by our side.

US drone strike kills at least fifteen in Pakistan

Monday, January 18, 2010

According to local officials, a United States drone attack in Pakistan’s South Waziristan province has killed at least fifteen people, although some reports put the death toll as high as twenty. The incident occurred in the Shaktoi region of the province.

“Now the death toll is 15. It could rise further. People are still busy removing rubble,” said a senior security official to the Reuters news agency. He commented that most of the dead were foreign fighters.

“The drones are apparently tracking and targeting Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud, whose presence is frequently reported in the area,” said another official.

The United States has increased attacks using drones since a suicide bomber killed seven US intelligence agents in eastern Afghanistan in late December of last year.

US Congresswoman Jackie Speier comments about Obamacare, Paralympics

Saturday, November 9, 2013

With the 2014 Winter Paralympics set for March, Wikinews sought comment from U.S. Representative Jackie Speier, who serves California’s 14th congressional district about the event and how current U.S. policies impact people with disabilities. Elected to the U.S. House in 2008, she serves on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the House Armed Services Committee. For the first time ever, the Paralympics will be broadcast live in the U.S. on network television.

((Wikinews)) : Will “Obamacare” have a positive or negative impact on the lives of people with disabilities?

Jackie Speier: By-and-large the Affordable Care Act will have a significant and lasting beneficial impact on persons with disabilities […] Most importantly, pre-existing conditions will no longer prevent persons with disabilities from obtaining health insurance. Lifetime limits on medical expenses will be removed and preventive services will be free. All of these provisions of the law create health insurance that is highly supportive of good health outcomes for everyone, but in particular for those who have a disability.

((WN)) : Are there any Paralympic athletes or elite athletes with disabilities from your district that people should know more about?

Jackie Speier: There are currently two Paralympic athletes who train or live in my district that people will definitely hear more about in the coming years. One is a young woman named Allie Hyatt who trains in Judo with Willy Cahill, [whom] I have also trained with. Allie, who is visually impaired and just 15, has already won numerous awards and will participate in the Youth Olympic Games next year. She is sure to be a force in the Judo world for many, many years. Hyatt lives in San Francisco and Cahill is the founder and CEO of the Blind Judo Foundation.

Another great athlete is Mohamend Lahna who is training for the Rio Olympics in 2016 for the paratriathlon,” Speier continued. “He is from Morocco originally but lives now in San Mateo and trains daily at the College of San Mateo. He runs marathons with a prosthetic leg and has his sights set on winning several medals atworld and Olympic events in the future. Lahna has proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), a birth defect that affects the hip and pelvis. He is married and has a 1-year-old child.

Wikinews also sought comment from other members of Congress, including John K. Delaney, Mike Honda, Kyrsten Sinema, Eric Swalwell, Raúl M. Grijalva and Ann Kirkpatrick but at publication time, had received no response.

New Orleans, Louisiana —After Category 4 storm Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans, on the night before August 29, 2005, several flood control constructions failed. Much of the city flooded through the openings. One of these was the flood wall forming one side of the 17th Street Canal, near Lake Pontchartrain. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is the primary agency for engineering support during such emergencies. A USACE team was assessing the situation in New Orleans on the 29th, water flow was stopped September 2nd, and the breach was closed on September 5th.

How To Smack Down The Common Symptoms Of Heartburn Gerd

By Walt Brown

The anguish from heartburn that happens with folks who endure the symptoms from GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is occasionally so terrible that a heart attack is suspected. The pain emanates from stomach acids being pushed back up the esophagus and into the throat. Because the esophagus is in the chest area between the lungs, the acid stirs up the esophagus and causes pain, sometimes so excruciating that it is logical for those suffering from GERD to mistakenly believe they are having a heart attack. That is very traumatic and disturbing.

Most common symptoms of GERD heartburn come about after a individual has a meal. For a lot of people, heartburn is a trouble they have to address with for their entire lifespan. There is generally a period of time where it repeatedly happens or the intensity increases and this can happen for weeks or months prior to the attacks and the intensity goes away or is reduced.

Other elements that lead to acid reflux and the most common symptoms of GERD heartburn include the amount and the type of liquids that reflux from the stomach into the esophagus, the stomach not operating normally while in the vacating process and the esophagus not clearing away properly. Occasionally the band of muscle located around the lower end of the esophagus doesn’t open and close at the suitable times or individual saliva is not properly neutralizing stomach acid.

Representative Heartburn Symptoms

Heartburn happens in back of the heart therefore the term heartburn. People having common symptoms of GERD heartburn may have to manage with food and liquid moving up from their stomach and into their throat and at times to their mouth. They generally feel a bitter taste in their mouth when this happens. Other common symptoms of GERD heartburn include belching, temporarily loosing the ability to speak, a prolonged cough and problems swallowing. Heartburn is generally not considered to be a serious condition, however for people who have persistent heartburn or terrible heartburn, health troubles can happen.

Heartburn Medications

Antacids are for sales that are efficient in neutralizing stomach acid and bringing down the common symptoms of GERD heartburn. All the same, antacids are not really successful at assisting people who have serious heartburn. Ask your physician about the class of drugs that act to preclude acid reflux from happening. Theses medications function by increasing the tautness on the barrier between your esophagus and stomach, while a few are configured to ameliorate the body’s capability of evacuating the stomach fluids.

Listen closely. Your physician is your first line of defense against GERD heartburn. Physicians acquainted with this morbid malady know that reducing the acid in your stomach will alleviate the pain in your chest. There are many over-the-counter antacid medications that are available, but don’t try and guess which ones are best from watching the television commercials. Consult a physician who can sort out the various medications available and select the best one for you based upon diagnostic tests. Guessing is not an option here. Your health is paramount here. You may need a higher dosage than is available over-the-counter at your local pharmacy.

US President Obama celebrates his first Martin Luther King Jr. Day while in office

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

On Sunday, at a Bapist church originally founded by freed slaves, US President Barack Obama addressed the congregation about the “Dream” of slain civil rights activist Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—whom Obama credits with paving the way for his 2008 election—and about the importance of hope and faith in his own life.

On Monday, Obama, with his family in tow, served hot lunches at a local Washington soup kitchen—one of several ways America’s first black president planned to pay tribute to the late Dr. King on the federal holiday that honors his legacy and lasting impact upon society.

Later at the White House, Obama will host a gathering consisting of small selected group of African-American seniors and their grandchildren where they will discuss the meaning of the civil rights movement and how it still effects them to this day. Following which, that evening, the Obamas are slated to attend the “Let Freedom Ring” concert at the Kennedy Center. A musical event that will feature gospel artists and choir members from various area churches among other houses of worship.

Another prominent American politician, governor-elect of New Jersey, Chris Christie held a banquet on Monday evening to honor the importance of Dr. King’s message as well. Other commemorations included a march in Seattle where participants rallied for issues in the African-American community.
