Origin of the Pizza

The early Greeks were the first in learning the secrets of mixing flour and water. The dough would be rounded and flattened then heated over hot stones. The round flat bread found its’ way to Italy. In the 18th century the flat bread was called ‘Pizzas’. The pizza was an inexpensive meal and sold by vendors in Naples to the people. Keep in mind there were no topping on the pizza at this time.

Queen Margherita was much beloved by her subjects. In the latter part of the 19th century the King Umberto and Queen Margherita of Spain were touring Naples. Queen Margherita was curious about the flat, round bread that she saw many of her subjects eating on the streets. Her guards were ordered to bring her Pizza bread. Queen Margherita loved the bread.

For her pleasure Queen Margherita summoned Chef Rafaelle Esposito from his pizzeria to the royal palace to bake a selection of pizzas for court. Rafaelle made a special pizza for the Queen. Note the topping artistry. The colors red, white and green which represent the colors of the Italian flag were the color scheme for the topping. The ingredients were tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and fresh basil. Rafaelle Esposito was the first to put topping on the pizza bread. This pizza was known as the Pizza Margherita and is known today in Naples and has spread throughout the world. Variations began to spread throughout Italy. Meat was introduced in Bologna and the Neapolitan pizza has cheeses, herbs and vegetables.

Pizza gained popularity in America and Western Europe after World War II. While Western Troops occupied Italian territories they were first introduced to pizza. Returning home to America and Western Europe the pizza became commercialized. We now have multiple variation of the pizza. The pizza has come a long way since the Greek creation

Wikinews interviews a Restore the Fourth organizer

Wednesday, July 3, 2013

A grassroots movement known as Restore the Fourth, dedicated to the protection of the 4th Amendment to the US Constitution, are to hold protests countrywide on July 4. The planned protests come in the wake of information about NSA surveillance leaked last month, notably the PRISM surveillance program and the collection of Verizon phone records. Wikinews interviewed Jett, a national organizer from this recently created movement.

((Wikinews)) First of all, could you explain what Restore the Fourth is all about?

Jett: At its core, RestoreTheFourth is about protecting citizens’ constitutional rights. Specifically, we’re dedicated to bringing awareness and action to the expanding overreach and elimination of the 4th Amendment to the US Constitution.

((WN)) What is your role at Restore the Fourth?

Jett: My job at RestoreTheFourth could be summarized as ‘project coordinator’. Every person who wants to help can help in a tremendous way. I simply make sure that their skills get used in a way that would be most beneficial to the movement: web development, public relations, etc. I also field questions from the press and promote knowledge of our cause.

((WN)) What are your plans for direct action, outreach, etc.?

Jett: Our press release includes a list of ‘demands’ for what we want to see in order to restore our privacy rights, including reform of the PATRIOT Act and increased accountability for public officials. In the very short term, these protests and demonstrations bring awareness to the issue, something that’s really important in enacting reform. In the long term, however, we expect to create a legal organization dedicated to restoring these rights inherent to every American. By partnering with various other organizations that share our moral values, we can further these goals.
On July 4, we will have over 100 protests in all 50 states, showing that the citizens of America are truly serious about protecting their rights.

((WN)) By what means do you hope to achieve such change?

Jett: This movement started only a few weeks ago, and since then we’ve experienced exponential growth and progress. Since the movement is still very young, plans diverge in the long term on what we hope to achieve. Personally, I’d like to see a combination of legislative and litigative action (something like what the ACLU does), and others want to see further plans of action. With organizations such as the BORDC, stopwatching.us and the EFF behind us, I feel that we can achieve all of this and much more.
HAVE YOUR SAY
What do you think is the right balance between surveillance and privacy?
Add or view comments

((WN)) Is the movement US-only or will it extend to other jurisdictions as well? Do you think it would be fair for the US to spy on non-citizens?

Jett: I believe that rights are inherent to all humans, not only United States citizens. In the long term I’d certainly like to see people of all nations protected from the slow elimination of privacy that we’re all experiencing.
He’s [Edward Snowden] being treated as a ‘martyr’ of sorts. It seems to distract from what he truly believed in.

((WN)) What do you think about Edward Snowden’s whistleblowing?

Jett: I think that too much attention is being given to his personality instead of what he fought for. He’s being treated as a ‘martyr’ of sorts. It seems to distract from what he truly believed in — transparency for the government and inherent privacy for all Americans.

((WN)) What do you think about his future, given the legal grey zone in which he currently is?

Jett: Hard to say. He may be captured by any number of agencies, or he may live a free man. Whatever happens, he has the eyes of millions of people on him, all of whom will yell very loudly if anything occurs.

((WN)) Thank you very much for your time.

Jett: Thanks for the opportunity.

Meetings are underway at NATO headquarters in an attempt to reassure Russia that the missile defence plans pose no threat. The United States maintains the system is to protect against missiles from rogue states, whereas Russia sees the system as compromising its strategic interests in the region.

In today’s talks NATO allies encouraged the United States to make the planned anti-missile shield capable of covering all of Europe. They did this without committing themselves to joining the project.

Irrigation water to a substantial proportion of Australia’s farming regions could be cut due to drought conditions, Australian PM John Howard has warned.

Mr Howard’s comments concerned the Murray-Darling Basin, one of the largest systems in Australia. “If it doesn’t rain in sufficient volume over the next six to eight weeks, there will be no water allocations for irrigation purposes in the basin”, adding that the drought conditions could continue until May 2008.

He continued “It is a grim situation, and there is no point in pretending to Australia otherwise,” he said. “We must all hope and pray there is rain.”

Russia, in coordination with the government of the United States and Canada, is planning to build a tunnel from Russia to Alaska, Viktor Razbegin, deputy head of industrial research at the Russian Economy Ministry, told reporters in Moscow Wednesday.

The tunnel is budgeted to cost US$65 billion and would take 10 to 15 years to build. The tunnel is to provide train and automobile transport between Alaska and the Russian Far East, and to carry petroleum and natural gas pipelines, and high-voltage electrical cable.

The proposed tunnel is 64 miles long, or about 100 kilometers, in total, and is designed to link with two islands in the Bering Strait. The project is expected to have a very positive economic effect in the area.

Derek Brower, an energy market expert, called the project “absurd” and suggested the Russian government is playing political games to threaten its European customers to sign energy deals.

“I’ve never heard of this plan,” said Sergei Grigoryev, Vice President of oil pipeline monopoly Transneft.

“To be honest, anyone who look[s] at the map will realize that the project is too hard to implement,” an anonymous government source told Reuters.

Telstra sale legislation debated in Australian House of Representatives, considered “urgent”

Tuesday, September 13, 2005

The legislation and amendments ensuring the sale of Australia’s half-privatized telecommunications provider, Telstra, was moved and debated on September 12. The Liberal/National coalition government has come under criticism for the allotting of time for debate as being insufficient.

In Federal Parliament Leader of the House Tony Abbott moved to adjourn debate at 9.06pm, to which his Labor counterpart Julia Gillard attempted to adjourn the Telstra debate until today, but Abbott put the question and used the Government’s majority to move debate onward.

Abbott then moved that the legislation, comprising of three bills, be considered as urgent and allotted approximately forty-five minutes to debate all three. The Opposition had attempted to further amend the urgency motion which failed due to Government majority — there were six divisions in the space of approximately half an hour, all which failed. Gillard and Dick Adams had called the process “a disgrace”, and the amendments (negotiated earlier by Senator Barnaby Joyce) were termed the “‘Backdown Barnaby’ bribe” by Stephen Smith before the Deputy Speaker Ian Causley asked him to withdraw.

Whilst the Government has an absolute majority in the Australian Senate, it is not guaranteed that the necessary legislation will pass this house. Garnering the support of key Senator Joyce is critical to ensure that the bills will pass (as he will have the deciding vote) and he has already stated that, due to a damning report released earlier in the House of Representatives showing that fourteen percent of lines were faulty amongst other criticism, that it has turned the “green [light] to amber” [1]. Joyce was crucial in defeating a Senate Opposition motion to delay debate until October 4, even though he himself agreed that the time for debate should be extended; he stated in an interview on the AM program on ABC Radio National that he voted against the motion as he believed crossing the floor would destroy any “political capital” he had to enable him to further negotiate improvements to the Telstra deal within his own party.

Pennsylvania state trooper found guilty of first-degree murder

Friday, March 20, 2009

In the United States, a suspended Pennsylvania state trooper has been convicted of first-degree murder for killing his girlfriend’s estranged husband.

Kevin Foley, 43, faces a mandatory life sentence without parole for slashing to death John Yelenic, a Blairsville dentist who was in the final stages of divorcing his wife, Michele. Foley’s attorney said he plans to appeal the decision. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.

Foley previously said he “loathed Dr. Yelenic” and asked another fellow trooper to help kill him. During his testimony, which lasted several hours, Foley claimed he was joking and had no true intention of carrying out the threat, but the Indiana County jury rejected that defense after about six hours of deliberations.

John Yelenic was found dead in his home on April 13, 2006, one day before he was planning on signing his divorce papers. Charges were brought against Foley in September 2007, more than 17 months after the murder.

Foley, who had been on suspension from the Pennsylvania State Police, was himself the final witness to take the stand Wednesday in the trial. Foley insisted he was innocent during his testimony, and even made jokes that the jury laughed at on a few occasions.

“I never made a threat with the intention of carrying it out,” Foley said under cross-examination by the prosecution.

When Senior Deputy Attorney General Anthony Krastek pressed Foley for what was funny about asking another state trooper to help him kill Yelenic, Foley answered, “There isn’t any joke. It’s just my personality, my behavior (with co-workers).”

Prosecutors said Foley killed Yelenic after going to the dentist’s house to confront him over the terms of the divorce. Prosecutors claim Foley slashed Yelenic several times with a knife and pushed his head through a small window. Yelenic bled to death.

“John has his justice tonight,” Mary Ann Clark, a cousin of Yelenic, told MSNBC. “John deserved this; he was the most wonderful person in the world. He died the most horrible death and tonight, this is his night. The system worked.”

Foley had been living with Michele Yelenic for two years at the time of the homicide. Prosecutors previously said Foley and Michele helped perpetuate rumors that Dr. Yelenic molested their son. John and Michele Yelenic had been separated in 2002. Michele Yelenic stood to collect Dr. Yelenic’s estate and a US$1 million life insurance policy, and could lose about $2,500 a month in support if the divorce was finalized, a Pennsylvania grand jury previously determined.

Michele Yelenic, who has not appeared at the trial, may face legal action herself, media reports indicated. A sentencing hearing for Foley is scheduled for June 1.

The Best Car Loan Fundamentals Explained

Submitted by: Jason Creation

When we decide to get a new car, most of us just don’t have that type of cash laying around to buy it with. This is where a car loan comes into play. There are some things that you should be well aware of being getting yourself a car loan.

First off, you should understand that there’s an amazing opportunity here on the internet when it comes to getting a car loan. There are hundreds of different companies online that offer car loans and with a little bit of research you are going to be able to figure out which type of car loan is going to be the best fit for you.

Let’s take a look at what the different types of car loan that are available to consumers on the internet.

Long-Term: These types of car loans are usually only offered to consumers when they are looking to buy a brand new car and will usually last for a length of thirty six, forty eight, and sixty months. This type of car loan will provide you with a smaller monthly payment, but you will end up having to pay more over the duration of the loan due to the interest rates.

One thing to be aware of with these types of loans is that if you are not careful than the value of the car that you get could fall below what you actually have left to pay on the loan which is referred to as an upside down loan.

Short-Term: These types of car loans will have a higher monthly payment attached to them, but at the same time you will end up paying less money on the interest than you would with the long term loans. These types of loans are usually the best way to go if you have the budget to afford a higher monthly car loan payment.

There are a lot of different ways you can go in order to get yourself a car loan. Different financial lending institutions will offer their potential clients different types of car loan and you should always consider which types of car loan options are available to you before you decide which one fits your personal financial profile.

Credit Unions: If you happen to be a member of a credit union, you would have the opportunity to apply for a comparatively larger car loan with a smaller rate of interest than you would be offered from other financial lenders. Make certain that you check with your credit union to see what types of offers they have available with their car loans.

Car Dealers: Often times it is a lot easier to get yourself a car loan through a physical car dealership than through the other methods. The only down side to this is that the interest rates that you will be offered will be higher on this type of car loan, but on the other hand the process is very quick and there are high chances of being approved for it.

Home Equity Car Loans: By leveraging your home as a piece of collateral, you are be enabled to get yourself a car loan. Even though this type of loan has the ability to provide you with a higher interest rate, there are some tax advantages to doing this that may offset that cost. You should consult with your tax attorney in the event that you decide to explore this option.

The benefit of having the internet at your disposal when it comes to getting yourself a car loan is the ability to research all of your options thoroughly. As long as you do all of your homework and fully understand all of the terms of any financing deal that you are about to get into, you will be well prepared for any potential problems in the future should they arise.

Belgian formation talks: King consults incumbent PM

Monday, December 3, 2007

The caretaker prime minister of Belgium, Guy Verhofstadt, reappeared on the political stage today as he accepted the royal request to suggest solutions to the ongoing federal government formation talks.

Recollecting his statement to the press on June 10, 2007, when he recognised his electoral loss and the victory of his opponent Yves Leterme, he told reporters today that he “hadn’t thought nor hoped to face you once more, but the King has asked me to inform him on a short term about possible strategies to deal with the political stalemate in which we have ended up over the last few months.”

Our country is experiencing one of its most severe political crises of the last decades. The elections are six months behind us you see, and the country still doesn’t have a worthy government. Meanwhile, our country’s image is being damaged en socio-economic and daily problems of the people remain unsolved.

Indeed, after 177 days, the country’s political parties have still found no compromise on the roles of the French- and Dutch-language community. Two days ago, Leterme returned to King Albert II to tender his resignation as leader of the formation talks.

The incumbent PM said he would discretely contact the leaders of all democratic parties during the next few days. He said his starting point would be dual: the country needs a considerable reform of its federal status, and there are certain urgent problems that outrange the capacities of the caretaker government dealing with the ongoing affairs.

Verhofstadt called for all involved to take responsibility, in the interest of the country and its citizens.
