US Senate passes housing aid bill

Saturday, July 26, 2008

A Saturday, July 26th, meeting of the United States Senate resulted in the passing of a $300 billion housing aid bill designed to help homeowners facing foreclosure by providing financial aid. In addition, the bill created a government emergency fund for mortgage companies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The legislation is expected to benefit up to 400,000 homeowners. The Congressional Budget Office said that between now and December 31, 2009, that if any bailout for the companies was needed, they expected it to be less than $25 billion.

The House on July 23th, passed the bill with a final vote of 272 in favor and 152 against. The final vote in the Senate was 72 in favor and 13 against. President Bush had initial woes about the bill based upon a $3.9 billion part of the legislation allowing for repurchase and improvement of foreclosed homes by the stricken neighborhoods.

The Bush Administration believed that this could be a potential problem, because it created a incentive for mortgage companies to foreclose homes. Bush has since changed his mind on the matter and is expected to sign the bill in the near future.

The bill has been considered one of the most important pieces of housing legislation in years. Senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut said that “this bill is going to make a difference almost immediately.” Despite the bill’s overwhelming support, it has had its dissidents. “We are pretending to chain a monster here and we are, instead, letting that monster loose,” said Arizona Representative Jeff Flake. Originally a supporter of the bill, Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa has changed his opinion because of the addition of the emergency fund for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. “This bill has fallen prey to the special interests on Wall Street and K Street at an unjustifiable expense to taxpayers and homeowners on Main Street,” said Grassley.

4 local government areas in New South Wales, Australia locked down after COVID-19 case

Wednesday, August 11, 2021

The local government areas of Ballina Shire, Byron Shire, the City of Lismore, and Richmond Valley in New South Wales, Australia were placed under stay-at-home restrictions effective at 6PM local time on Sunday, with residents only allowed to leave their homes for essential reasons that include grocery and other essential shopping, medical appointments, vaccinations, and caring duties. The order is to remain effective until 12:01AM on August 17th.

This follows the announcement of a COVID-19 case in the region – a man who had travelled to the Byron Shire from Sydney, also under such restrictions. New South Wales chief health officer Kerry Chant said the man, currently under treatment at Lismore Base Hospital, was “infectious in the community for a while”, and had “symptoms for several days”.

Mayor of Byron Shire Michael Lyon told residents “if anyone is not feeling well please, please go and get tested”, stating while information about the COVID-19 case is emerging, “…people should be making sure they are checking in with QR codes whenever they go into a shop or business, wearing a face mask and social distancing.” New South Wales recorded 283 cases of the coronavirus on Monday.

Lead Apron Racks Safe And Organized X Ray Protection Storage

By Stephen Lamb

Lead apron racks are useful tools for the safe storage of lead aprons. Lead aprons are valuable medical devices that must be properly cared for to prevent damage or loss. Aprons that are stuffed in cabinets or other insufficient storage devices are at risk for becoming damaged and the life and usability of the apron may be reduced. Furthermore, it can be quite harmful for an x-ray apron that is not functioning properly to have continued use. Due to the dangerous effects x-ray radiation exposure can cause, malfunctioning aprons may allow harmful electromagnetic waves to leak through and cause serious problems to the patient or technician. Through the use of suitable x-ray apron storage, lead aprons can remain organized, easily accessible, and in proper working order.

Since x-ray aprons are a costly investment for any medical facility to make, it is important that aprons are protected to ensure extended use. By keeping well-maintained lead x-ray apron storage, a hospital’s or other x-ray imaging facility’s tools can be more efficiently used. If lead aprons are kept organized in lead apron carts or other similar x-ray apron storage devices, medical staff will never have to waste time searching for their aprons and can present the aprons to physicians immediately when needed. The main focus of x-ray imaging should be obtaining quality, detailed medical imaging; therefore, lead x-ray apron storage should be used to eliminate the unnecessary distractions of a disorganized apron supply.

A vast array of lead apron carts and storage devices are available to suit individual x-ray facility needs. Wall mounted, peg-style lead apron hangers have aluminum construction and range in size from racks with pegs holding as few as 2 aprons or as many as 18 aprons. Combination wall-mounted lead apron hangers can also function as lead glove storage racks.

The most space-efficient lead x-ray apron storage option, swing arm lead apron racks, is wall mounted and can rotate out nearly 180 degrees. The lead apron hangers that are attached to swing arm lead apron racks have a chromium-plated design and can hold up to 110 pounds of weight. With this lead x-ray apron storage device, aprons can easily be stored behind doors or in other convenient locations and are very easily accessible by way of the movable hangers.

Another useful lead x-ray apron storage tool is mobile x-ray apron racks, which allow for easy portability from room-to-room. Many mobile x-ray apron racks are also swing arm lead apron racks and have an all-steel composition. Anti-tip bases and easy rolling casters with locking wheels help keep mobile x-ray apron racks stable and maneuverable. Mobile x-ray apron racks typically can hold 10 aprons and some also serve as lead glove storage racks. On garment-style mobile x-ray apron racks, up to 300 pounds of radiation protection apparel can be stored. Some garment lead apron carts require heavy-duty lead apron hangers to be used in conjunction with them while other garment lead apron carts have built-in swing arms for apron hanging.

Lead x-ray apron storage devices help to maintain a neat and organized medical imaging environment in which medical personnel and patients can easily function. To prolong the life of x-ray protective aprons and to ensure that patients and physicians remain protected with properly functioning, undamaged lead aprons, all x-ray imaging facilities should be well equipped with x-ray apron storage devices.

Sprint Nextel customer service rep. harasses client; Sprint cancels his account

Sunday, July 22, 2007

Virginia – Joshua Brady, a former Sprint Nextel customer, has had his cellular phone account shut off, but not because he wasn’t paying the phone bill, or even because he was late on payments, but because a customer service representative who assisted him, began to call him outside of her job, and make death threats to him in September of 2006. She was never fired for her actions, Brady says.

Brady has agreed to be interviewed by Wikinews to tell his story. All information and claims have been logged with Brady’s attorney and federal authorities.

The representative from Sprint Nextel, who for safety reasons is only being identified as Jessica, was working at the company’s call center in Ontario, Canada where Brady’s call to customer service was directed. According to Brady, Jessica then began to call him outside of her job duties at the call center after their first contact.

Brady called the center around 6:00 p.m. (eastern time) on a Saturday and attempted to receive help on a billing question and to find a way to stop prank calls. Brady requested a “soc code”, a code placed into the phone, that would allow for the number that was pranking him to be blocked. Unfortunately, Jessica did not know what that was, but tried unsuccessfully to find it. According to Brady, the only thing she could find was “the ANI feature call centers have.”

Brady then described to Jessica the billing issue he was having. He was being charged “for text messages I was not making”, even though he had unlimited text messaging with his billing plan. Meanwhile, Jessica called for a supervisor to help locate the code. As this customer service request over the phone was taking quite a bit of time, the two of them then started to discuss what two people would normally discuss if just chatting; sports, the weather, movies and music and if Virginia was a nice place to go on vacation. The supervisor then came by Jessica’s station with no luck on finding a code.

Later that night, around 10:30 p.m., Brady received a call. He answered it and much to his surprise, it was Jessica. He answered the phone with the usual “hello” and the voice on the other end answered with “hello Josh.” Brady was “surprised” that she had not said “hello Mr. Brady.”

“I then asked who it was, and she said Jessica. She told me about her day, and hoped that I did not mind her calling.” Then according to Brady, she started to describe how much she hated working in a call center, and how the job “pays the bills”, and asked if she could “come visit me sometime”. Brady said that he “immediately started to record” the call. Brady also stated that Jessica was not aware she was being recorded, and that further conversations were recorded without her knowing.

The call lasted about 15 minutes, but Brady said she “spoke so fast and moved along through things” that he “didn’t have a chance to talk if I wanted to. It [the call] ended with me interrupting her and telling her I had to go to dinner with a friend.”

Brady immediately called customer care back and reported Jessica’s actions to a supervisor (Jason), and the Floor Manager (Also named Jessica) at the Coos Bay call center, which is where his call happened to be directed. The advice he received was to “play along” and continue to report her actions until they could locate someone “better equipped” to handle the situation.

Jessica then began to call “about every other day or so” which turned out to be almost 30 calls, according to Brady who reported each call she made to Sprint Nextel.

Sprint Nextel then told Jessica to cease and desist all contact with Brady, but that didn’t stop Jessica from contacting him. She somehow found out the screen-name of his AOL Instant Messenger account, and left messages threatening to kill him. Brady logged the messages and faxed them to Sprint, who about a week later sent Brady a letter, saying that his accounts have been terminated.

“The purpose of this letter is to inform our that our office has received a complaint regarding your recent questionable interactions with our customer care group. Recent interactions with our company have prompted us to formally contact you. Sprint Nextel terms and conditions state that “termination of services. consistent with this agreement…”, said the letter from Sprint Nextel.

Brady states that Jessica is still employed with Sprint Nextel, despite the fact that all instant messages left by Jessica were forwarded to Sprint Nextel.

As recently as July 10, 2007, as many as 1,000 accounts were terminated by Sprint Nextel because customers were complaining too much and asking too many questions about billing.

“While we have worked to resolve your issues and questions to the best of our ability, the number of inquiries you have made to us during this time had led us to determine that we are unable to meet your current wireless needs,” said one letter to a sprint customer as recent as June 29, 2007. The letter states that the service will be terminated just one day after the letter was written despite saying they “understand switching to a new carrier causes an inconvenience.”

Two weeks ago, Sprint addressed the media about the mass-cancellations. “These accounts have been researched very carefully,” Sprint spokeswoman Roni Singleton said. “We feel strongly that the decisions we made, we stand by them. These decisions weren’t made lightly.”

“If the average person is calling less than once per month and these people are calling 40 or 50 times more, that takes away from customer service,” Singleton said. “Our priority is to improve the customer experience.”

Wikinews sent e-mails to Sprint Nextel on July 20 regarding the Brady incident; to date no response has been received.

Update: On July 23, 2007, Wikinews received an email response from a Sprint representative, going to some length to explain the termination of the customers who were calling up to hundreds of times a month. No information was given on the Brady case covered in this article; “customer privacy considerations” were cited as the reason and “no comment” was Sprint’s reply.

Berlin court issues provisional order against the Wikimedia Foundation

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, January 19, 2006

A district court in Berlin has issued a preliminary injunction against the Wikimedia Foundation for displaying the true name of a computer hacker on the German Wikipedia. The family of the deceased German hacker, known as “Tron,” obtained the provisional order in Berlin on December 14. The order was corrected on December 19 because it was at first addressed to Saint Petersburg, Russia instead of Saint Petersburg, Florida.

Tron became famous as the first person to crack the encryption of Pay TV and calling cards. He died in 1998, at the age of 26, in an apparent suicide. Questions have arisen as to the nature of the hacker’s death.

The court has ordered the German Wikipedia to remove all forms of the hacker’s complete civil name “Boris Floricic”. The court states that this is justified by the fact that the hacker never worked under his civil name, but instead his Internet alias.

The legality of the order is in question, because the Wikimedia Foundation servers are not located in Germany, but instead in the United States. Whether the Foundation will comply or if the family’s attorneys have any means to enforce the decision remains in doubt. The case prompted many German media outlets to publicly display the hacker’s real name.

On January 17 the same court also issued a preliminary injunction against Wikimedia Deutschland e.V., the German chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation, citing the same reasons. In that injuction, the chapter was ordered to cease redirecting www.wikipedia.de to de.wikipedia.org. Wikimedia Deutschland complied, but its lawyers announced that they will appeal the decision, saying that Tron’s civil name has long since been public knowledge.

Wikinews interviews Michael Hartung, the Australian Deputy Chef de Mission

Sunday, September 9, 2012

London, England — Yesterday, Wikinews interviewed Michael Hartung, the Australian Deputy Chef de Mission at the Australian team quarters in the Paralympic Village.

((Hawkeye7)) What does the Deputy Chef de Mission do?

Michael Hartung: Makes the chef look good! (laughter) No, my role here is in support of our Chef de Mission and the team. There’s two of us, myself, and Kate McLoughlin is the other Deputy Chef de Mission. She focuses on the operations side of things, the logistics and travel and all that sort of stuff, the foundations of preparing the team and really getting here and back home safely with all their gear. The part of the team that I look after is the performance side of things, so in my particular area I have guys in the sports science and sports medicine grew, which is managed by Alison Campbell. We have classification in my area which is managed by Geoff Han. We’ve got high performance and coach support, which is Chris Nunn, and the media guys fit under my side of things, and they are managed by Tim Mannion. All of those guys are all staff at the APC, and they’ve been working with us for a considerable amount of time. They are all experts in their areas so as far as the performance elements of the team are concerned we’ve got a great bunch of people that come in here and its a continuation of the the job that we prepare for and that we do every day. So that’s been good, we’re not a bunch of outsiders who’ve come together just for this team. We’re professionals who work in these fields, doing these jobs day in and day out, so we should be experts when we get to the games in how it should be delivered.

((LauraHale)) Is everything going according to plan for you guys? You’ve got more gold medals than you got in Beijing.

Michael Hartung: Yep. Still not there yet in total but we’re happy. Our goal coming into this, one main goal was to finish top five, and we’re just hanging on. It’s tough. That’s the reality of Olympic sport. We’re having a really good games at the moment. The sub goal of ours was to just beat the medal tally at Beijing which we’ve achieved on gold, which is terrific, and we should achieve on total as well if things keep going the way they are for the next couple of days. That’s a terrific result and it just shows the strength of the Paralympic movement, and the strength of our competitors that there are so many nations fighting it out to be in that top five, and we’re certainly not there by any means. The nation that’s just behind us, the USA, is a traditional powerhouse of Paralympic sport, and a nation that has done extremely well over the history of Paralympic sport. So where we are right now is in a really good position and if we stay where we are now, and pick up a few more medals, we’ll be really happy with the performance of the team and where it’s gone on the medal tally.

((LauraHale)) In the lead up to this there was a lot of coverage of how much money the government gave you for stuff like the recovery centre inside here. How fundamental has that government support been towards this?

Michael Hartung: The Federal government provides us with basically all the funding that we give to the sport programs to deliver sport programs to athletes. And without the Federal government’s support, we cannot do the job that we do. It is essential, and without their investment we certainly wouldn’t be seeing the results that we have here. That been said we’ve also had great support in addition to funding from ministers and senators that have come across here and supported the team. Senator Kate Lundy is here. She’s departing tonight, but has been here for most of the games. It’s been terrific for us and the team to have had that sort of support for us here.

((LauraHale)) Classification has been a big issue in these games. To an extent the Americans lost some… Oscar’s classification’s been a big deal… There hasn’t been much Australian news related to classifications.

Michael Hartung: No, which is a really good sign. I think that shows all the work we’ve put in over the years to classification. We’ve got a program that’s been led by Jim MacMahon that we consider to be a world leading program. Which means that our policies and procedures and our work at a national level to ensure that people know where they fit in the classification spectrum, and no doubt early on is very important to us. So we minimise the risk of an athlete turning up and having a change in classification. This is really the Big Show. This is where it really matters, and for athletes to come here and not be 100% sure about their classification is something that we absolutely want to avoid. We should know where they sit, and there is a lot of money that is now invested through Federal funding and through the states’ institutes and academies and so on. A lot of money gets invested and we need some surety about where that investment is going, and which athletes are prospects for medals when they turn up.

((LauraHale)) We’ve talked to the Oceania people who’ve said they’ve got tremendous support from the APC with the Wales thing. Are you guys going to continue to do that support? Because they couldn’t say enough nice things about the APC and the coaches talking to their athletes.

Michael Hartung: Yeah, that’s terrific. I think that we certainly have an ongoing role that we have played and continue to play in Oceania in helping those countries really develop. New Zealand’s doing great and they’re certainly self-sufficient, and here as a great sporting nation, but for some of our other, smaller neighbors, it’s great that we’ve been able to provide support. We’ve provided opportunities for them to come and be part of the Cardiff staging environment we set up for our team. We started preparations for that back in 2007. So they joined us there, and hopefully that’s helped then achieve their great results here, with Fiji winning a gold medal. That’s a tremendous achievement for Oceania as a whole, not just Fiji, and that’s been terrific to know that the staging camp has assisted with that, along with the other support that we provide. We helped establish the Oceania Paralympic Committee not so long ago. We have Paul Bird, one of our Vice Presidents, as the President of the Oceania Paralympic Committee, and so we have a really close working relationship with those nations. It’s terrific to see them succeed, and to be successful.

((LauraHale)) Have you had a chance to see many of your athletes compete? And has there been any performance that has really stood out, Australian or not Australian?

Michael Hartung: Yeah! I’ve been fortunate to see a lot of our guys compete, right across the board. There’s many, many highlights for me. I don’t think there’s been one stand out performance. Natalie Smith getting a bronze medal to get us underway on the first day was such an incredible achievement, knowing where the shooting program was four or five years ago, not really being able to crack the medals, and to finally do it here in the first event, and to be the first medal was wonderful. Jacqui Freney’s performances here to win seven gold medals has been amazing, and she’s had a great meet here. Matt Cowdrey breaking the record and becoming the athlete to win the most gold medals for Australia has been a real achievement. But then seeing some of the things we’ve seen on the track and track cycling, Michael Gallagher and the other guys, they’ve had a great performance here at the games, incredibly well, and I think the most satisfying element of all of those performances is knowing the work that’s gone into supporting those athletes from the the people around them, but the work that those individual athletes have put into achieving success, because coming here, you can see that this is an elite sporting environment, and only the best in the world will achieve success, and you don’t become the best by doing it half arsed; you have to give it 150%, and that’s what it takes. No one wins unless they do that.

((LauraHale)) Anything else that we should know?

Michael Hartung: Apart from what we’ve just spoken about, I think that the London Organising Committee has done a terrific job with these games. They’ve made a sensational environment. Every games has its challenges, but the challenges here have been quite minor, and haven’t caused any major disruptions. It enabled us to create an environment here which is really performance based. That’s what the Australian Paralympic Committee is working on all the time is to create the best environment for our athletes. So that’s been great. The crowds here have been tremendous and the support of the British public, and that started long ago with the acknowledgment of both Olympic and Paralympic. Whenever they say things, they say “Olympic and Paralympic”. It’s not been just about one games, primarily the Olympic Games or whatever, and that’s been really good in terms of the psyche of the British people, because they know about Paralympic sport. They’re a very knowledgeable audience, and that’s been really great for the crowds here. They’ve cheered really loudly for the British athletes, but they’ve also been giving all the other athletes a big cheer as well, which is wonderful. And taking away from these games, the crowd, and the involvement and the support of all the athletes that have competed has been wonderful.
