Reports say that the package was found outside the terminal on a street curb just before 10:30 a.m. (eastern time), and turned out to be men’s cologne.

Why Doctors Prefer Scrubs}

Submitted by: Sophie Katelin

Scrubs originated back in the 18th century. Previously, importance was never given to the attire worn by doctors. Later on, the risks of performing surgeries and carrying out medical procedures in regular clothes were discovered. Since then, doctors have shifted from regular clothing to wearing scrubs. Scrubs were never freely available in the market until recently. Today almost all super markets and general stores are loaded with scrubs. Scrubs are easily available at online stores as well, especially in the United States. Medical Scrubs are notable among the many online stores in the United States of America.

The purpose of this article is to discuss the top reasons why doctors and medical personnel greatly prefer scrubs while dealing with patients. The first and foremost reason is to control infectious diseases. According to several studies, it has been proved that the primary reason for the transmission of harmful bacteria is the medical scrubs worn by the doctors. Wearing scrubs makes it possible for a doctor to change from one scrub set to another quickly as he travels from one patient to another in a different room. Scrubs are quicker to change in and out from as compared to regular clothing. Scrubs are easy to wash and many hospitals offer laundry services for medical scrubs, thus reducing the chance of spread of infections.

One of the reasons why doctors prefer scrubs is to distinguish themselves from visitors and patients in the hospital. This is essential for the safety of the patients as well. In case of an emergency, it is important that the hospital staff or doctor is identified as soon as possible. Cheap Scrub Sets also help discriminate between different health care roles. Surgical teams mostly wear green colored scrubs, pediatricians normally wear printed scrubs with cartoons or friendly themes in order to calm the children.

It is not very long ago when only nurses were instructed to wear medical scrubs. With the passage of time, surgeons have also started using medical scrubs as a part of their routine. The reason being that it enhances their vision. Green is especially important in enhancing the doctor’s vision since it is the opposite of the color of blood i.e. red. By catching a glimpse of their green scrubs, surgeons can re adjust their vision so that they can easily differentiate between the pink and red patches on their patient’s bodies.

The last but not the least reason is the comfort, durability and ease of wearing scrubs for medical personnel. Throughout the day, medical personnel need to lift patients from bed to bed, help them move and spend long hours standing and walking. Scrubs are so comfortable that they can fit any working condition, since they are lightweight and made of comfortable fabrics such as cotton, polyester and cotton-polyester combination. Additionally, they also save the medical personnel from the hassle of waking up every morning, not being able to decide what to wear. By having a couple of pairs of medical scrubs, they save a lot of time, money and avoid frustration. Scrubs are affordable as well as comfortable. Online stores are best for buying medical scrubs since they offer great deals and clearance sale offers. Clearance Scrub Sets is also available at most online stores.

Recession hits Australian asbestos victims fund

Saturday, May 9, 2009

Asbestos victims seeking their retribution payment of A$350 million from the Asbestos Injuries Compensation Fund are approaching the Australian government following an admission from James Hardie compensation fund trustees stating they are unable to pay the victims in lump sums due to the recession.

The James Hardie building materials firm which established the $1.5 billion fund in 2006, claims it is short 3.5 million for its compensation fund payouts due to the decline in the American housing market which provides 85 percent of its company sales. The settlement stipulates that in the event of a shortfall, victims will receive funds in the form of installments.

We’re talking to the government and James Hardie about funding options.

Asbestos advocacy groups representing injured former employees are requesting help from the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd for additional funds from James Hardie. “We’re talking to the government and James Hardie about funding options,” said Dallas Booth, CEO of Asbestos Injuries Compensation Fund.

“For example victims might be able to sign over their rights to the state government so that they get compensated in full until the fund can be replenished and then the state government can get their money back straight out of the fund.” suggested Paul Bastian, New South Wales secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union .

The victims groups are totally opposed to any instalment plan whatsoever.

Barry Robson, president of the Asbestos Diseases Foundation explained that James Hardie has paid $153 million in taxes to the Australian Taxation Office, and that the Asbestos Diseases Foundation will request of the Rudd Government to defer these taxes until the economic condition improves and James Hardie’s profitability returns. In this way the Australian government would allow James Hardie’s taxes to go to the asbestos fund.

Victims are currently paid out via a lump sum arrangement, and the Asbestos Diseases Foundation is advocating for the status quo. “Well how they’re paid now is in lump sum and we’d like to continue with that. The victims groups are totally opposed to any instalment plan whatsoever,” said Robson in the interview with PM.

The Asbestos Diseases Foundation emphasized that a payment plan could be ineffectual, as asbestos victims and those suffering from mesothelioma may die before receiving full payments.

I think the state Government should be our white knight.

Bastian noted to the Australian Associated Press that asbestos victims have upfront costs to deal with, including medical bills, and would be adversely affected by an installment plan option. “Victims also want to ensure that their families are looked after, that there’s contingencies and everything is settled before they pass away, in many cases,” said Bastian to the AAP.

Bastian told The Australian he would request Prime Minister Rudd stay true to his promise that “no one would go without compensation”. “I think the state Government should be our white knight,” commented Bastian.

Asbestosis is a disease resulting from asbestos exposure which causes lung scarring and can lead to lung cancer. Exposure to asbestos can also lead to a more serious condition known as mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a cancer which develops in the sac surrounding the lungs and chest cavity, abdominal cavity, or the sac surrounding the heart. Patients with malignant mesothelioma generally do not have positive outcomes, and once diagnosed typically have six months to a year to live.

Conducting A Title Search

By Tony Seruga, Yolanda Seruga And Yolanda Bishop

If you are involved in real estate investing, then you probably already realize that due diligence is extremely important. Taking the time to do due diligence now can help you avoid all kinds of problems that could crop up in the future. One of the most important parts of due diligence includes doing a title search on the property you are considering. When you take the time to do a title search, you’ll be able to find some of the potential issues that could affect the investment that you are making and the entire development plan. Of course you should also pay attention to other issues, such as flood plains, environmental issues, and any other things that could ruin your plans and the potential of a resale.

What is a Title?

First of all, it is important that you understand fully what a title is and why it is so important. Basically, a title is the legal term for an owner’s interest in a piece of property. Of course it can also refer to the formal document that proves that you have ownership of the property. If you are going to transfer ownership of the property to someone else, then you will have to transfer that document to another person. However, title is different from possession, which is a right that comes with ownership, but it may not be able to prove ownership. In some cases you may transfer the title and possession independently as well.

Three Elements of a Title

You also need to understand the three different elements of a title. First of all there is possession, then the right of possession, and then the right of property. All three of these elements make up what as known as a title.

– Possession

The possession is that actually holding of the property, whether or not you actually have the right to do so.

– Right of Possession

Basically the right of possession is the legitimacy of possession, even though you may not actually have the possession of the property. This means that there is evidence that will be upheld by the law showing that you have the right of possession to the property.

– Right of Property

The right of property is a different right, in which case, if all the facts were actually known, you would be able to defeat all other claims to this property.

It is important to note that the three different elements of title could all be held by a different person.

Applications of Title

In many companies that have a private property system that is quite sophisticated, title documents are used for vehicles, real estate, and even for intangible property at times. When title documents are actually used, they are usually part of a system of registration that helps verify and keep records of who actually owns the property. You may also find that a title can be a permanent legal record of condemnation of property in some cases, such as a salvage or automobile junk title.

When it comes to real estate, the deed is the legal instrument that is used to transfer the title. The rule is that a thief cannot actually convey good title, so title searches have become routine, or at least highly recommended when you purchase property, such as real estate. There are actually some places in the United States that require, by law, that you do a standard Title Search as a part of transferring ownership of the property.

Real Estate Title

Having a real estate title is basically providing evidence that you hold the legal ownership of the property. When you buy a piece of real estate, you may make sure that you have the right to occupy, use, or resell the property without any problem. You can verify marketability of property and previous ownership of a piece of property, just by doing a title search. However, if you plan on purchasing a piece of property that has multi-unit ownership, such as time shares, cooperatives, and condos, there may be some special considerations to keep in mind.

Benefits of a Title Search

As you can see, it is imperative that you conduct a title search before purchasing a piece of property. The following are just a few of the benefits of taking the time to do a title search before you actually pay for a piece of property.

Benefit #1 – You’ll Be Sure You Can Own It – Many times there can be something in the history of the title that could take you from actually taking possession of the property. No one wants to pay for property and then find out that they may not ever be able to actually own it. So, if you take the time to do a title search before you buy, you’ll be sure that you will be able to actually own this piece of property with no hindrances.

Benefit #2 – Problems Will Be Found Before You Buy – There have been some people who never did a title search, and then when they were actually putting money on the property, they suddenly found out that there was a problem. This can end up leaving you in a lurch, so it is better to know up front if there are going to be any problems, rather than finding out at the last minute that there are some problems that may keep you from taking ownership of the property.

Benefit #3 – A Good Attorney Can Be of Help – While you may not be able to do the title search on your own, whether you don’t have the time or the experience to do so, but you can have a good attorney do it for you. You can also have a title company perform a title search for you. Both will charge a fee, but it is well worth the money.

Before you get to deeply involved in the purchasing process of real estate, be sure to take the time to do a title search to avoid any problems in the future. You’ll be glad you did it!

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Navy helping New Orleans pets

Saturday, September 17, 2005

The Spanish word “tortuga” means “turtle.” But in the wake of the New Orleans disaster, the USS Tortuga is helping other animals.

For nearly two weeks now, sailors from Tortuga’s repair division have devoted much of their time during this disaster relief operation to ensure the health and comfort of displaced pets.

September 4th, just after the ship moored to a pier at Naval Support Activity (NSA) New Orleans, HT1(SW) Mark Hanley and DC1(SW) Antony Graves gathered materials from the repair shop on board to construct a kennel along the levee. The facility they made soon became a popular shelter for the homeless animals of the storm.

Tortuga’s search and rescue team brought aboard more than 170 displaced citizens during this past week, providing them with food, water, medical aid and a place to sleep.

Tortuga’s makeshift kennel, named ‘Camp Milo & Otis,’ has housed as many as 90 dogs, eight cats, one rabbit, one guinea pig, a pair of parakeets and a flightless pigeon during the past week of operation.

Currently, there are 14 dogs that remain in Tortuga’s care, as many of the other pets have been taken to animal shelters in the area for extra medical attention, or been claimed by their owners upon arrival to Tortuga. The pets that Tortuga has registered have all been in the hands of professional veterinarians assigned to provide expert medical attention to the members of Camp Milo & Otis.

Dr. Kelly Crowdis and Dr. Latina Gambles, both from Tuskegee University and Christian Veterinary Missions, have treated many of the pets for infection, dehydration, malnourishment and broken bones at the Camp during the past week.

“The animals were bathed and assessed before physical interaction with the sailors,” said Dr. Crowdis. “They’ve been given immunizations, antibiotics and medications based on their medical needs.”

Dr. Crowdis added, “What these sailors have done on their own has been such a heart-warming thing. As an animal lover, it is so comforting to know that everyone cares about the animals in addition to the human lives rescued from the storm. I’m very pleased with these guys for taking the initiative to construct this kennel.”

Graves, Hanley and other members of their division have consistently bathed, fed, walked and given special attention to every dog, every day.

“We play with them,” said Hanley. “We take them out of their kennels to give them attention every day. And we’ll continue to do that for as long as our ship’s mission keeps us here.”

September 11th, the Agricultural Center at Louisiana State University donated supplies to “Camp Milo & Otis” in support of Tortuga’s efforts to help the animal victims.

”We got medical supplies, bowls, food, cages, leashes, collars, toys, cat litter and cleaning supplies from these people yesterday,” said Graves. “It’s nice to know that so many people out there have heard about what our ship is doing, and responded by donating so much to support us the best they can.”

A photo gallery of unclaimed pets is on the USS Tortuga’s web site.

As part of disaster plans, the Department of Homeland Security has also deployed Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams to provide medical care to pets and livestock, as well as provide any needed veterinary medical care for search and rescue dogs.

There are over 3,850 animals being sheltered around the state. If someone is looking for a pet they should contact their nearest Humane Society or go online to http://www.petfinder.org// . More information is also available at http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu//.

Controversy over whether New Orleans Mayor failed to follow hurricane plan

Sunday, September 4, 2005

New Orleans’ Mayor Ray Nagin is facing criticism over the evacuation of citizens before Hurricane Katrina struck.

In the days leading up to Hurricane Katrina, hundreds of buses were sitting in bus yards, some less than a mile from the Superdome. Louisiana Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco commented, “The buses could have saved an estimated 20,000 people if they had been used for emergency evacuations which President Bush had declared two days before Katrina hit.”, however the evacuation was ordered by Mayor Nagin, President Bush having no direct authority to order evacuations. Thursday, after the storm, Blanco by executive order used school buses for evacuation.

The 2000 edition of the southeast Louisiana evacuation plan on page 13, paragraph 5 states:

5. The primary means of hurricane evacuation will be personal vehicles. School and municipal buses, government-owned vehicles and vehicles provided by volunteer agencies may be used to provide transportation for individuals who lack transportation and require assistance in evacuating.

There were however alternative emergency plans, including ones held by state Homeland Security offices, and it is unclear which one was being operated to.

The Superdome had been opened shortly before the storm as a shelter of last resort for those who had not evacuated. As FEMA observed at that time: “Most residents have evacuated the city and those left behind do not have transportation or have special needs.” Roughly 150,000 people were not evacuated from the city. During the Hurricane Ivan evacuation 600,000 people failed to evacute the city.

According to WWLTV, during a news conference on Sunday before the hurricane struck, Mayor Nagin claimed he “could and would commandeer any property or vehicle it deemed necessary to provide safe shelter or transport for those in need”. However photos circulated appear to show unused school and privately owned busses left stranded in flood waters.

It is unclear whether Mayor Nagin knew these particular buses existed, since the Orleans Parish School Board is not under his jurisdiction and his office would not normally know the location of OPSB bus yards or be able to contact the drivers of those buses to place them into service. Normally it is the job of FEMA to coordinate between the various local jurisdictions such as the OPSB and the City of New Orleans in this case. That is, under the rules of prior hurricane responses, FEMA would ask all local jurisdictions for a list of resources under their control. Then FEMA would have taken a request from Nagin for buses, relayed it to the Orleans Parish School Board or other local jurisdictions which had buses, and at that point the OPSB would have provided the buses to Nagin. That coordination did not happen here, but it is unclear whether Nagin ever made such a request prior to the hurricane and after the hurricane they were underwater and useless.

However, if he had known about them, the declaration of a state of emergency on August 26 gave him the right under Louisiana law to commandeer them for the duration of the emergency. The failure to issue a timely evacuation order in effect made it physically impossible to evacuate the nursing homes, hospitals, and those without automobiles.

In a radio interview on WWL-AM shortly after the hurricane, Mayor Nagin said, ” I need 500 buses, man. We ain’t talking about — you know, one of the briefings we had, they were talking about getting public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out here. I’m like, “You got to be kidding me. This is a national disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans.” “

Former head of Royal Bank of Scotland Fred Goodwin to reduce pension

Thursday, June 18, 2009

Sir Fred Goodwin, the former head of Royal Bank of Scotland has said he will reduce his pension by up to £200,000 a year, leaving him with approximately £350,000 a year.

He has been heavily criticised for receiving a large pension, while being blamed for contributing to RBS’ recent issues, which is now owned mainly by the UK government, after a £20 billion bailout last autumn. RBS has previously threatened legal action to recoup some of the money.

In October 2008, Goodwin agreed to a deal with the bank that allowed him to take his whole pension of £703,000 a year. There was no penalty for claiming it early, at the age of 50. Both the board of RBS and the UK government were criticised for failing to do more to prevent Goodwin gaining such a large pension.
